Sheriff: Man ate cocaine to avoid arrest

A 38-year-old Patterson man allegedly ate crack cocaine after narcotics detectives tried to approach him Tuesday on Cremo Lane, St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert said in a news release.
—Jason Cavalier, 38, of the 100 block of Cremo Lane in Patterson, was arrested at 7:22 p.m. Tuesday on the charges of obstruction of justice, resisting an officer, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Detectives with the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Narcotics Division investigating illegal drug activity on Cremo Lane attempted to make contact with Cavalier. Cavalier fled on foot.
As he fled, detectives observed Cavalier ingest crack cocaine. When detectives apprehended Cavalier, he attempted to forcefully pull away several times. Cavalier was also found to be in possession of items of drug paraphernalia. Detectives transported Cavalier to Franklin Foundation Hospital and following his release from the facility, he was jailed with no bail set.
Hebert reported responding to 38 complaints in the parish and reported the following arrests in east St. Mary Parish:
—Mary Griffin, 46, of the 1300 block of Joseph Street in Siracusa, at 8:59 a.m. Wednesday on a warrant for failure to appear on the charges of disturbing the peace intoxicated. A deputy responding to a separate call made contact with Griffin and located the active warrant for her arrest. The deputy released Griffin on a summons to appear in court Dec. 7.
—Christina A. Breaux, 22, of the 100 block of Diane Lane in Patterson, at 11:34 a.m. Wednesday on a warrant for failure to appear for a drug court status conference. A deputy located Breaux at her residence on the warrant. Bail is set at $100,000.
—Clement Mire, 33, of the 700 block of Julia Street in Amelia, at 12:25 p.m. Wednesday on a Terrebonne Parish warrant charging him with simple burglary of an inhabited dwelling. A detective received information that Mire, who held an active warrant for the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office, was living at a Julia Street address and located him there. Bail is set at $50,000.
—David Brown, 38, of the 100 block of Todd Lane in Bayou Vista, at 6:58 p.m. Wednesday on two warrants for the Brusly Police Department on the charges of speeding, tail lights required, driving under suspension, no insurance, expired license plate and open container of an alcoholic beverage in motor vehicles. A deputy located Brown at his home on the warrants. Bail is set at $1,648.
—A juvenile male, 16, of Bayou Vista, at 10:19 a.m. Tuesday on the charges of disturbing the peace, ungovernable juvenile and simple assault. A deputy responded to a report of a student causing a disturbance at Patterson High School. During the investigation, the deputy learned that after repeatedly disrupting class, he made threatening statements towards a school administrator. The juvenile was released to a guardian pending juvenile court proceedings.
—Daniel Snyder, 35, of the 700 block of Appianway Street in Little Rock, Arkansas, at 12:01 p.m. Tuesday on the charge of domestic abuse battery. A deputy responded to a report of a battery that occurred in the parking lot of a business on U.S. 90 in Bayou Vista. The deputy learned from several witnesses that a man was seen pushing a woman while yelling at her.
With the assistance of a Berwick police officer, the deputy located the two people at a nearby hotel and identified the man as Snyder. During the investigation, the deputy determined that Snyder grabbed the woman’s arm and forcefully pushed her while screaming at her. Snyder was jailed with no bail set.
—Brittany Crouch, 29, of the 1500 block of Cross Road in Bayou Vista, at 4:41 p.m. Tuesday on a warrant for failure to appear on the charges of direct contempt, operating a vehicle with an expired motor vehicle inspection, operating a vehicle without a driver’s license, no child restraint, and failure to honor written promise to appear. A deputy responding to a complaint of a disturbance at a residence on Cross Road made contact with Crouch and located the active warrant for her arrest. Crouch was jailed and released after posting $349.50 bail.
—Burkin Dupre, 29, of the 1500 block of Cross Road in Bayou Vista, at 4:43 p.m. Tuesday on a warrant for domestic abuse battery. A deputy responding to a com-plaint of a disturbance at a residence on Cross Road made contact with Dupre and located the active warrant for his arrest.
The warrant was obtained following an investigation into a report of domestic abuse. The investigating deputy learned that Dupre repeatedly hit a woman during an argument at a home in Bayou Vista. Dupre was additionally charged on a warrant for issuing worthless checks at 4:12 p.m. Wednesday. While incarcerated on other charges at the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center, a jailer located the active warrant. No bail is set.
—Courtnie Chenevert, 33, of the 2000 block of Keith Street in Morgan City, at 5:11 p.m. Tuesday on a warrant for failure to appear on the charges of operating a vehicle with a suspended license, speeding and no seatbelt. A deputy transported Chenevert from the Assumption Parish jail to the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center on the warrant. Chenevert was released after posting $5,000 bail.
—Tierra A. Wilson, 29, of the 1000 block of Ciro Street in Siracusa, at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday on a warrant for failure to appear for a drug court status conference. A deputy located Wilson at the Fairview Treatment Center on the warrant and transported her to the parish jail. Bail is set at $100,000.
Morgan City Police Chief James Blair reported the following arrests:
—Melvin C. Sylvester, 36, of James Street in Morgan City, at 8:48 a.m. Wednesday on a warrant for probation violation. Sylvester was transported to the Morgan City Police Department from another correctional facility and was jailed.
—Tyrone Singleton, 29, of Gibson, at 10:02 p.m. Wednesday on the charges of driving with a suspended driver’s license, reckless operation of a motor vehicle with an accident and on warrants for failure to appear to pay a fine on the charge of loud music and failure to appear to pay a fine on the charge of open container.
Police received information of a vehicle traveling west on U.S. 90 at a high rate of speed. Officers responded to the area and located a vehicle involved in a crash in the area that was determined to be the vehicle seen speeding. The driver of the vehicle was identified as Singleton, who had a suspended driver’s license and had warrants for the 6th Ward City Court. Singleton was jailed.
—Gregory Williams, 66, of Franklin, at 9:23 a.m. Tuesday on the charge of disturbing the peace.
An officer was dispatched to a business on David Drive in regards to a disturbance. The officer was told by witnesses that Williams was causing a disturbance and alarming customers inside the business. Officers made contact with Williams, who was asked to calm down but refused. Williams was jailed.
—Leo D. Pellissier, 41, of Country Village Drive in Morgan City, at 11:52 a.m. Tuesday on a warrant on the charge of hit and run driving.
Pellissier turned himself in to the Morgan City Police Department in regards to an active warrant held for his arrest. Pellissier was jailed.
—Cherry L. Donati, 29, of Second Street in Morgan City, at 2:33 p.m. Tuesday on the charges of violation of uniform controlled dangerous substance law and possession of Schedule II methamphetamine.
An officer observed a vehicle speeding on Federal Avenue within a school zone. A traffic stop was conducted and the driver was identified as Donati. Officers got consent to search the vehicle and located suspected methamphetamine. Donati was jailed.
—Nicholas S. Case, 20, of Garner Driver in Morgan City, at 3:43 a.m. Wednesday on the charges of no turn signal, violation of uniform controlled dangerous substance law, possession of marijuana and possession of Schedule II hydrocodone.
An officer observed a vehicle in the area of Maple Street that failed to use a turn signal and conducted a traffic stop. The driver was identified as Case. He gave the officer consent to search the vehicle, and the officer located suspected marijuana and pills which were identified as hydrocodone, Blair said.
The location that the traffic stop was conducted is near a school, which violates the uniformed controlled dangerous substance law making that area a drug free zone. Case was jailed.
Patterson Police Chief Patrick LaSalle reported the following arrests:
—Joshua W. Crappell, 27, of the 1100 block of Ditch Avenue in Morgan City, at 6:42 p.m. on the charges of two counts of an illegal controlled dangerous substance in the presence of a juvenile. No bail is set.
—Joshua Twiner, 30, of the 700 block of Gabriel Street in Patterson, at 9:23 p.m. Tuesday on the charges of two counts of possession of an illegal controlled dangerous substance in the presence of a juvenile, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. No bail is set.
Berwick Police Chief James Richard reported the following arrest:
—Cody White, 22, of River Road in Berwick, at 11:28 a.m. Tuesday on a warrant charging him with simple criminal damage to property. White was transported to parish jail with bail set at $500.
