Sheriff: Woman almost struck child with vehicle

A 29-year-old Amelia woman was charged with assault and reckless driving Tuesday after she nearly struck a child with her vehicle on Westside Park Lane. Authorities received other complaints about her driving, too, St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert said in a news release.
—Marlen Hernandez, 29, of Westside Park Lane in Amelia, was arrested at 4:52 p.m. Tuesday on the charges of aggravated assault and reckless operation of a vehicle.
A deputy was dispatched to a complaint of reckless driving on Westside Park Lane in Amelia. The deputy collected evidence that Hernandez sped down the lane, nearly striking a child who was walking home from the bus stop with a parent.
Hernandez’s vehicle hit a puddle of water, splashing the child. The deputy also received additional com-plaints about Hernandez’s driving. While at the scene, the deputy observed Hernandez speed down the lane and then brake rapidly when she saw the police unit. A child was in the vehicle Hernandez was driving. The juvenile was turned over to a guardian. Following the investigation, Hernandez was booked into parish jail with no bail set.
Hebert reported the fol-lowing arrests:
—Anthony Beard, 40, of Cross Road No. 2 in Bayou Vista, was arrested at 5:36 a.m. Tuesday on the charge of disturbing the peace by using profanity.
A deputy responded to a disturbance at a home on Cross Road No. 2 and saw a man cursing in the street. The deputy made contact with the man and identified him as Beard.
The deputy assisted Beard in retrieving his belongings from the home. Beard continued to yell profanities throughout the interaction despite being asked repeatedly to refrain from cursing. Beard was booked into parish jail and was released on a summons to appear in court Dec. 14.
—A juvenile male, 16, was arrested at 10:01 p.m. Friday on the charges of illegal carrying of weapons, carrying a weapon in a firearm-free zone and obliterated serial number.
Narcotics detectives patrolling the Morgan City area during the Louisiana Shrimp and Petroleum Festival observed a juvenile male near the seawall with a handgun concealed in his waistband. Detectives made contact with the juvenile and discovered the weapon had an obliterated serial number.
The investigation took place near Lawrence Park where the Louisiana Shrimp and Petroleum Festival was underway. The juvenile was released to a guardian pending juvenile court proceedings.
Berwick Police Chief James Richard reported the following arrests:
—Dean Beranek, 30, of Burchfield Lane in Berwick, was arrested at 4:51 p.m. Friday on the charges of possession with intent to distribute Buprenorphine, prohibited acts Suboxone and violation of controlled dangerous substance law in a drug-free zone. No bail is set yet.
—Amber Beranek, 28, of Ditch Avenue in Morgan City, was arrested at 4:59 p.m. Friday on the charges of possession with intent to distribute Buprenorphine, prohibited acts Suboxone, violation of a controlled dangerous substance law in a drug-free zone and violation of protective order. No bail is set yet.
—Jeffrey Schexnider, 37, of Southeast Boulevard in Bayou Vista, was arrested at 1:35 p.m. Saturday on the charges of speeding and driving under suspension. He was released on $1,500 bail.
—Carrie Hubler, 28, of Francis Street in Berwick, was arrested at 4:34 p.m. Saturday on the charges of distribution of Buprenor-phine, possession of Cyclo-benzaprine and prohibited acts Clonazepam. No bail is set.
—Craig Nini, 35, of Toups Street in Berwick, was arrested at 2:53 a.m. Sunday on the charges of prohibited acts methamphetamine, resisting an officer with force and battery on a police officer. No bail is set yet.
—Mandi Hatfield, 29, of Florence Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 2:53 a.m. Sunday on the charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated second offense and driving under suspension. Hatfield was transferred to the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center in Centerville. Bail is set at $3,500.
—Henry Daigle Jr., 52, of Landry Lane in Stephensville, was arrested at 1:46 a.m. Monday on the charge of disturbing the peace intoxicated. He was released on $176 bail.
Patterson Police Chief Patrick LaSalle reported the following arrests:
—Clarence Ott Jr., 45, of Taft Street in Patterson, was arrested at 4:16 p.m. Sunday on the charge of simple assault. Ott was released on $250 bail.
—Abriahn Baker, 19, of Guyther Street in Patterson, was arrested at 11:11 p.m. Sunday on the charge of simple battery involving domestic violence. Baker was released on $750 bail.
—Alicia Bertrand, 31, of Cremo Lane in Patterson, was arrested at 2:11 p.m. Monday on a warrant charg-ing her with remaining where forbidden.
Morgan City Police Chief James Blair reported the following arrests:
—Ryan P. Bergeron, 27, of Boquet Street in Bourg, was arrested at 11:42 a.m. Friday on a warrant for failure to appear on the charge of speeding.
Bergeron was arrested at the Morgan City Police Department in regard to a 6th Ward Morgan City Court warrant. Bergeron was jailed.
—Jerry L. Percle Jr., 48, of Canton Street in Berwick, was arrested at 12:18 p.m. Friday on charges of red light violation and driving under suspension.
A patrolling officer ob-served a vehicle run a red light on La. 182 at the Colonial Shopping Center inter-section. A traffic stop was conducted and the driver of the vehicle, identified as Percle, had a suspended driver’s license. Percle was jailed.
—Justin M. Marzoni, 34, of Orange Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 2:10 a.m. Saturday on the charge of possession of stolen property.
A patrolling officer ob-served a vehicle traveling in the area of La. 182 near Martin Luther King Boulevard. The officer learned that the vehicle was reported stolen through the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office.
A traffic stop was conduct-ed and the driver of the vehicle was identified as Marzoni, who was jailed.
—Phillip M. Brooks Jr., 54, of La. 182 in Belle Chasse, was arrested at 7:43 p.m. Saturday on the charge of disturbing the peace intoxicated.
An officer responded to the area of Lawrence Park in regard to a report of an intoxicated subject lying in the street. The officer arrived and located a person matching the description provided, identified as Brooks. During an investigation, reports indicate that Brooks was suspected to have been drinking and was believed to be extremely intoxicated. Brooks was jailed.
—Joseph L. Estay III, 46, of Aucoin Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 9:43 p.m. Saturday on the charges of reckless operation of a motor vehicle, flight from an officer, DWI, resisting an officer and stop sign violation.
A patrolling officer ob-served a vehicle traveling on Marguerite Street drive off of the roadway onto the sidewalk and then back on to the roadway. The officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop but the vehicle refused to stop.
A vehicle pursuit ensued when the officer saw the vehicle run the stop sign at Sixth and Onstead streets. The pursuit continued for several blocks when the vehicle stopped in front of an Aucoin Street home.
The driver, later identified as Estay, was escorted out of the vehicle when he began to resist officers. After a short struggle, Estay was arrested. During an investigation, Estay was suspected to have been drinking and was believed to be intoxicated.
Estay was transported to the Police Department and refused the Intoxilyzer 5000 chemical test. Estay was jailed.
—Erick Billiot, 25, of Arenz Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 9:45 p.m. Saturday on a warrant charging him with probation violation.
Officers located Billiot on the Shrimp and Petroleum Festival grounds where he was arrested on a 6th Ward Morgan City Court. Billiot was jailed.
—Nicholas A. Breaux, 38, of Family Street in Pierre Part, was arrested at 4 a.m. Sunday on warrants for failure to appear on the charge of no driver’s license, two charges of contempt of court, and failure to appear on the charge of criminal trespassing.
Officers located Breaux on Marshall Street where he was arrested on several 6th Ward Morgan City Court warrants. Breaux was jailed.
—Michael W. Martin, 33, of Teche Road in Bayou Vista, was arrested at 9:47 p.m. Sunday on a 6th Ward City Court warrant for failure to appear on the charge of theft, 16th Judicial District Court warrants for failure to appear on the charge of theft, failure to appear on the charge of driving under suspension and failure to appear on the charge of issuing worthless checks, and on an Escambia County, Florida, warrant charging him with larceny and fraud.
Officers located Martin at the Shrimp and Petroleum Festival grounds and arrest-ed him on warrants. Martin was jailed.
—Ginger Russell, 39, of Oak Harbor Drive in Morgan City, was arrested at 11:11 p.m. Sunday on the charges of careless operation of a motor vehicle and DWI.
Officers responded to La. 70 in regard to a single vehicle crash. Police arrived and located the vehicle involved that appeared to have lost control and ran off of the roadway.
The driver, Russell, was suspected to have been drinking and was believed to be intoxicated. Russell submitted to the Intoxilyzer 5000 chemical test and yielded a blood alcohol concentration of 0.046 grams-percent. Russell was jailed.
—Luis A. Perez Leon, 30, of Waterworks Road in Morgan City, was arrested at 11:33 p.m. Sunday on the charge of disturbing the peace by intoxication.
—Jose M. Garcia Robles, 23, of Federal Avenue in Morgan City, was arrested at 11:33 p.m. Sunday on the charge of disturbing the peace intoxicated.
A patrolling officer ob-served what appeared to be a disturbance involving several people in the area of Fifth and Greenwood streets. The officer stopped to investigate when Leon and Robles were identified as two of the people involved. Leon and Robles were suspected to have been drinking and were believed to be intoxicated. Both Leon and Robles were jailed.
—Garrett E. Pearce, 27, of Rizzo Street in Patterson, was arrested at midnight Monday on the charge of simple battery.
A patrolling officer ob-served what appeared to be a disturbance in the parking lot of a local lounge on La. 182. The officer stopped and Pearce was identified as one of the people involved in the disturbance. During an investigation, officers was told by several people, including a person later identified as the victim of a battery, that the victim and Pearce were involved in an argument when Pearce allegedly committed a battery on the victim. Pearce was jailed.
—Bradford G. Jones, 38, of Glenwood Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 12:30 a.m. Monday on the charge of disturbing the peace intoxicated.
A patrolling officer ob-served a person walking in the middle of Victor II Boulevard near Cottonwood Street who appeared to be unsteady on his feet. The officer stopped Jones, whom the officer had previously dealt with earlier that night.
Jones, who was believed to be intoxicated, was instructed by officers to stay inside for the night. Jones was still suspected to be intoxicated and jailed.
—Paris Durkins, 29, of Egle Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 11:39 a.m. Wednesday on the charge of theft of goods.
An officer responded to a drug store on Brashear Avenue in regard to a report of a theft. The officer arrived and store employees said that Durkins had taken several items from the shelf and left the store without paying. Police obtained video footage of the incident supporting the alleged theft. Officers located Durkins at a home on Egle Street.
The items of the alleged theft, valued at $10.14, were recovered by police and released to the store. Durkins was jailed.
—Glynn J. Wilson, 44, of Myrtle Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 3:54 p.m. Monday on the charges of improper turning and no vehicle insurance, possession of crack cocaine and violation of uniform controlled dangerous substance laws.
A patrolling officer ob-served a vehicle make an improper turn from Brashear Avenue onto Fifth Street. The officer stopped the vehicle and identified the driver as Wilson. During a traffic investigation, proper insurance papers could not be provided. Wilson’s behavior made officers suspicious that Wilson may be involved in illegal narcotics activity.
The officer located suspected crack cocaine on Wilson. The location of the incident was within the area of a designated drug-free zone in violation of uniform controlled dangerous substance laws. Wilson was jailed.
—Jackson N. Purvis III, 32, of Oak Street in New Orleans, was arrested at 4:04 p.m. Monday on the charges of possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and violation of uniform controlled dangerous sub-stance laws.
Narcotics detectives were in the area of Lawrence Park when they observed a person holding what appeared to be drug paraphernalia in his hand.
The person, later identified as Purvis, was detained by investigators, who located suspected drug paraphernalia along with suspected marijuana on Purvis. The location of the incident was within the area of a church in violation of uniform controlled dangerous substance laws. Purvis was jailed.
—Alexus D. Lirette, 21, of Blakefield Drive in Schriever, was arrested at 10:24 p.m. Monday on the charge of simple battery.
—Wade J. Trahan Jr., 44, of Aucoin Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 10:25 p.m. Monday on the charge of simple battery.
Officers responded to Lawrence Park in regard to a reported disturbance involving several subjects. Police arrived and located Lirette, Trahan and a woman later identified as the victim of a battery. Officers were told that Lirette, Trahan and the woman, who showed signs of a battery, were involved in an argument. Lirette and Trahan were alleged to have committed a battery on the woman. Lirette and Trahan were jailed.
—Dajia Z. Johnson, 19, of Garber Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 11:50 p.m. Monday on warrants for probation violation, failure to appear on the charge of disturbing the peace and and failure to complete community service.
Officers located Johnson at a home on Sycamore Street on 6th Ward Morgan City Court warrants. Johnson was jailed.
—Trinity N. Todd, 21, of Railroad Avenue in Morgan City, was arrested at 3:53 a.m. Tuesday on a warrant for domestic abuse battery.
Todd was arrested at the Morgan City Police Department on a warrant, stemming from an incident reported May 23, of an alleged domestic abuse battery. Todd was jailed.
—Donovan P. Mabile, 32, of Derrick Street in Pierre Part, was arrested at 9:29 a.m. Tuesday on an Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office warrant for failure to appear on the charge of theft of a firearm. Officers located Mabile on La. 70 where he was arrested and jailed.
—Carlette Singleton, 53, of Bush Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 11:55 a.m. Tuesday on a warrant charging her with disturbing the peace by fighting.
Singleton turned herself in to the Morgan City Police Department on a warrant stemming from an investigation into an incident reported Feb. 10 of alleged disturbing the peace. Singleton was jailed.
—Ashley Jones, 35, of Mallard Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 1:10 p.m. Tuesday on warrants charging her with simple battery and contempt of court.
Jones turned herself in to the Police Department on a City Court warrant and Morgan City police warrant. The police warrant stems from an investigation into an alleged simple battery reported Feb. 10. Jones was jailed.
—Joshua A. Falgout, 37, of Sycamore Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 4:42 p.m. Tuesday on the charges of window tint violation, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and obstruction of justice.
A patrolling officer ob-served a vehicle traveling on U.S. 90 with window tint which obstructed the inward view of the vehicle. The officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop when the vehicle took the Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard exit and stopped near Allison Street.
As the driver, Falgout, exited the vehicle, suspected drug paraphernalia fell to the ground at the driver’s door. Falgout was detained, and the driver door window tint was found to have a tint meter with an 11 percent reading in violation of the 40 percent state-required minimum.
A firearm was also located in the roadway of Falgout’s path. Investigators obtained evidence that supported suspicions that Falgout had discarded the firearm as the officer was attempting to conduct the traffic stop. Falgout, a convicted felon, was jailed.
—Alex J.C. Theriot, 26, of Sixth Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 4:44 p.m. Tuesday on a warrant charging him with probation violation.
Theriot was transported from the Berwick Police Department to the Morgan City Police Department on a warrant. Theriot was jailed.
—Curtis A. Richard, 39, of Glenwood Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 5:46 p.m. Tuesday on the charge of unlawful possession of fraudulent documents, identity theft and theft.
An officer responded to a business on Brashear Avenue in regard to a person inside with a document that appeared to be fraudulent. The officer arrived and spoke with business employees and Richard who had attempted to cash a suspected fraudulent check.
Investigators gathered evidence which supported that Richard had attempted to cash stolen checks using a fraudulent identification card. Richard was jailed.
