Sheriff: Woman left infant in car for an hour

A 33-year-old Pierre Part woman was charged with child desertion after leaving an infant in an unattended car for an hour Saturday morning outside a business in Bayou Vista, St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert said in a news release.
—Tonya J. Conner, 33, of the 100 block of Derrick Street in Pierre Part, was arrested at 3:15 a.m. Saturday on a warrant for failure to appear on the charge of driving under suspension, no driver’s license and child desertion.
A deputy responded to a complaint of a suspicious vehicle at a business on U.S. 90 in Bayou Vista.
Upon arrival, the deputy made contact with the driver of the vehicle, identified as Conner.
The deputy also observed a 9-month old baby inside the car, Hebert said.
The deputy, who had conducted a walk-through of the business earlier that morning, recognized Conner as a person who had been inside the building.
At that time, Conner did not have the child with her, Hebert said.
The deputy determined that Conner left the infant girl unattended in the vehicle for about an hour while she was inside the business, Hebert said.
Deputies contacted the Department of Children and Family Services who turned the infant over to a family member, the sheriff said.
Deputies also learned that Conner was operating the vehicle without a license and had an active warrant for her arrest. Conner was jailed with no bail set.
Hebert reported responding to 112 complaints in the parish and reported the following arrests relating to east St. Mary Parish:
—A juvenile male, 16, of Verdunville, was arrested at 8:54 a.m. Friday on the charge of simple battery.
A school resource officer responded to a report of a fight at Centerville High School. During the investigation, the deputy learned that a 16-year-old boy started a physical altercation with another student, Hebert said.
The juvenile was released to a guardian pending juvenile court proceedings.
—Darius T. Brown, 37, of the 400 block of Clements Street in Patterson, was arrested at 10:27 a.m. Friday on a warrant for failure to appear on the charge of theft less than $750.
A deputy was dispatched to the Patterson Police Department where officers had detained Brown.
Brown was jailed with no bail set.
—Corey Stevens, 29, of the 600 block of Onstead Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 8:20 p.m. Friday on two warrants for failure to comply with the terms and conditions of drug court.
During booking at the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center, a jailer located two active warrants for Stevens’ arrest. No bail is set.
—Micah Soileau, 18, of the 500 block of Joey Street in Patterson, was arrested at 12:47 p.m. Sunday on a warrant charging him with criminal damage to property.
A deputy investigating an Aug. 31 complaint of a theft learned that Soileau damaged a bedroom door while visiting a residence in Garden City, Hebert said.
The deputy obtained a warrant for Soileau’s arrest and located him at the Morgan City Police Department jail where he was already incarcerated. Bail on the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office warrant is set at $500.
—James Crews, 58, of the 100 block of Simone Street in Pierre Part, was arrested at 1:15 p.m. Sunday on the charges of no motor vehicle inspection, driving under suspension, no motor vehicle insurance, littering and possession of open alcoholic beverages in motor vehicles.
A deputy patrolling Amelia observed a vehicle with a rejected motor vehicle inspection sticker driving on La. 182.
The deputy also observed the driver of the vehicle throw a drink can out of the window of the vehicle, Hebert said.
The deputy conducted a traffic stop and made contact with the driver, identified as Crews.
While speaking with Crews, the deputy learned that the container was a beer can, Hebert said.
The deputy also learned that Crews was driving with a suspended license and had no vehicle insurance or valid inspection.
Crews was jailed with bail set at $2,500.
—Erin E. Lasalle, 28, of the 100 block of Trevino Street in Berwick, was arrested at 9:45 p.m. Sunday on the charge of unauthorized use of a movable. A deputy investigating a complaint of the unauthorized use of a vehicle determined that Lasalle refused to return a car to its owner.
Lasalle was jailed with no bail set.
—Amanda Lake, 33, of the 100 block of E Lane in Morgan City, was arrested at 10:24 p.m. Sunday on the charge of simple battery.
A deputy investigating a complaint of a fight at a bar on La. 182 in Bayou Vista learned that Lake grabbed another woman and pushed her to the floor, Hebert said.
Lake was jailed with bail set at $500.
—Dennis Gonzales, 27, of the 100 block of Village Lane in Amelia, was arrested at 12:44 a.m. today on the charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.
A deputy patrolling Amelia made contact with Gonzales who was walking on West Syl’s Lane.
While speaking with Gonzales, the deputy discovered that Gonzales was in possession of a glass pipe containing a piece of metal wool and burnt residue that is consistent with the use of illegal drugs, Hebert said.
The deputy released Gonzales on a summons to appear in court Dec. 7.
Morgan City Police Chief James Blair reported the following arrests:
—Vanessa L. Clulee, 27, of Todd Lane in Morgan City, was arrested at 8:52 a.m. Friday on the charge of driving under suspension, a warrant for failure to appear on the charge of driving under suspension, and a warrant for failure to appear on the charge of improper lighting.
Officers were dispatched to the area of La. 182 and Grizzaffi Street in regard to a vehicle crash.
One of the drivers involved in the crash, Clulee, was found to have a suspended driver’s license.
Clulee also held active warrants for the Sixth Ward City Court. Clulee was jailed.
—Tyler M. Porche, 29, of Youngs Road in Morgan City, was arrested at 2:07 a.m. Saturday on the charges of driving under suspension, texting while driving and careless operation.
Officers were dispatched to the area of La. 182 and Myrtle Street in regard to a vehicle crash.
The driver, Porche, admitted to officers that he was texting while driving and ran off the roadway, Blair said. A computer check of Porche’s driver’s license revealed that his license was under suspension. Porche was jailed.
—Adrian L. Billiot, 33, of Franklin Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 1:46 p.m. Saturday on a warrant charging her with three counts of failure to appear and a warrant charging her with contempt of court.
Billiot was located at her home and arrested on active warrants she held for the Sixth Ward City Court.
Billiot was jailed.
—Alejandro Guiterrez, 29, of Berwick, was arrested at 4:10 p.m. Saturday on a warrant charging him with probation violation.
Guiterrez was already incarcerated in the Morgan City Jail, when an outstanding warrant from the 6th Ward City Court was discovered. Guiterrez remained jailed.
—Johnny DeBerry, 60, of Railroad Avenue in Morgan City, was arrested at 7:40 a.m. Sunday on the charge of appearing in public intoxicated.
Officers were dispatched to the area of Front Street near Fisherman’s Wharf in regard to an intoxicated individual.
Officers arrived and made contact with DeBerry. Officers observed an odor of alcoholic beverage on DeBerry’s breath, Blair said.
DeBerry was jailed.
Berwick Police Chief James Richard reported no arrests.
Patterson Police Chief Patrick LaSalle reported no arrests.
