’Jacks finish 3-0 at tournament

The Patterson Lumberjacks finished 3-0 at its Lumberjack Tournament with wins against Westgate, St. Martin’s and Ellender.
On Saturday, the Lumberjacks defeated Westgate 10-6 and St. Martin’s 10-2.
Against St. Martin’s, Sirbatian Charles earned the win. In six innings, he surrendered two earned runs on three hits with three walks and fanned nine.
Jake Lagrange earned the save for the Lumberjacks.
Taylor Harris finished 1-for-2 with the go-ahead RBI in the bottom of the sixth inning for the Lumberjacks. Other top contributors included Charles, 1-for-3, an RBI and Blake Dreyer, an RBI.
Later Saturday against Westgate, Kenny Singleton finished 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while Harris was 2-for-3, Tyrik Singleton, 1-for-4, a double and three RBIs; and Lagrange, 1-for-2, and an RBI.
Joel Singleton earned the win. In 4.2 innings, he surrendered an earned run on four hits and fanned four.
Lagrange also pitched for the Lumberjacks, surrendering five earned runs on three hits with six walks and fanned five in 2.2 innings of work.
On Thursday, Patterson defeated Ellender 4-3 in eight innings on a game-winning single by freshman Jamey Fabre.
“I was excited to see our guys find a way to win this game,” Patterson coach Ryan Jensen said.
Jensen credited Ellender pitcher Matt Ledet for his dominant pitching performance against the Lumberjacks.
Ledet tossed seven innings and surrendered three earned runs on just two hits with eight walks and 10 strikeouts.
However, Jensen said the combination of Spencer Landry and Lagrange going toe-to-toe with Ledet was key in the victory.
Lagrange earned the win after pitching three no-hit innings in which he didn’t surrender any runs, walked two and fanned four.
Landry started the game and in five innings, surrendered three runs — two earned — on two hits with two walks and 12 strikeouts.
“We made too many errors to consistently win games, but they pitched us out of some jams and we were able to come up with some defensive plays when we needed it. Sean Stewart made a couple (of) really athletic plays at (first) base that kept them from scoring runs.”
Ellender plated a run in the top of the first and Patterson tied the game at 1 in the bottom of the third and took a 3-1 advantage in the bottom of the fourth.
Ellender tied the game in the top of the fifth where the game remained until the bottom of the eighth inning.
With Patterson batting and two outs, Fabre singled Dryer home for the winning run to overcome what Jensen said was a “rough night” offensively in which the Lumberjacks left eight runners on base.
“That’s a big spot for a freshman, and it was exciting to see him deliver,” Jensen said of Fabre.
Fabre led the Lumberjacks at the plate with a 2-for-2 performance with an RBI, a run and a stolen base, while Singleton finished 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Ellender also left eight runners on base, while Patterson committed four errors.
Patterson (3-0) will return to action today when it hosts Baker in a 5 p.m. contest.
CCHS finishes undefeated at Lumberjack Tourney
Central Catholic finished 3-0 at the Lumberjack Tournament with two close wins sandwiched around a blowout.
The Eagles held off St. Martin’s Episcopal 3-2 Saturday, routed Ellender 12-1 Friday and held off Assumption 3-1 Thursday.
In Saturday’s 3-2 win, the Eagles scored the game-winning run when Gregory Leger scored on Barron Courtney’s RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The game was a rematch of last year’s Class 1A regional round contest the Eagles won.
In Saturday’s contest, each team scored a run apiece in the first and third innings before Central Catholic plated the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.
Bryson Barbier earned the complete-game victory. In seven innings, he surrendered two runs — one earned — on five hits with a walk and fanned nine.
Samuel Guarisco led the Eagles at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance with two triples, an RBI and a run, while Barron was 2-for-3 with a stolen base and Courtney, 2-for-4 with a double an RBI.
Central Catholic left eight runners on base in the contest.
In Friday’s 12-1 win against Ellender, Central Catholic struck first for two runs in the second inning, and after Ellender scored its lone run in the bottom of the third, the Eagles plated runs in each of the next four innings, beginning with three in the fourth and ending with five in the top of the seventh.
Barron and Blake Hidalgo combined to surrender just two hits in the contest, with Barron earning the victory.
“I was pleased with the way Charlie Barron and Blake Hidalgo performed on the mound,” Central Catholic coach Tyler Jensen said. “They both threw lots of strikes and lived around the strike zone.”
Barron surrendered an unearned run on one hit with two walks and fanned seven in five innings of work.
In two innings of relief, Hidalgo struck out three and surrendered a hit.
Despite the huge victory, the Eagles still stranded 15 players on base, including a whopping 12 in scoring position.
“That will hurt us at some point,” Jensen said. “We need someone to step up and get the big (two-out) hit. It was good to see us show some life starting in the (fourth) inning and hit some balls hard. I really hope we start playing like we can on a more regular basis.”
Courtney finished 4-for-5 with two RBIs for the Eagles at the plate, while Barron was 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two stolen bases. Other contributors included Sage Thibodeaux, 2-for-4, a double and an RBI; Bryson Barbier, 2-for-3, an RBI and a stolen base; Matthew Barbier, 1-for-3, an RBI; and Patrick Barron, 1-for-5, an RBI.
On Thursday, Central Catholic held off Assumption, 3-1.
While Assumption loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning, Bryson Barbier came on to close the game for the Eagles.
Central Catholic took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third, and after Assumption plated a run in the top of the fifth to cut the deficit in half, the Eagles responded with another run in the bottom of the frame.
Guarisco earned the win as he surrendered one unearned run on two hits with one walk and fanned seven in five innings of work.
In 1.2 innings of relief, Patrick Barron struck out three.
Matthew Barbier led the Eagles with a 2-for-3 performance with a double and a run, while Courtney finished 1-for-2 with two RBIs, Bryson Barbier, 1-for-3, a triple and an RBI; and Guarisco, 1-for-2, a double and a run.
Central Catholic’s contest against Centerville today has been postponed, so the Eagles (3-0) now will return to action later in the week at Hanson Memorial’s tournament.
Berwick finished 2-1 at Basin Bengal Classic
Berwick finished 2-1 at Morgan City’s A&E Basin Bengal Classic with wins against H.L. Bourgeois and Morgan City before falling to Central Lafourche in its tournament finale.
Against H.L. Bourgeois Thursday, Berwick broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.
After H.L. Bourgeois countered with a run in the top of the sixth, Berwick exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the frame.
Berwick’s pitching held H.L. Bourgeois to just two hits and fanned 13 batters.
Neal Theriot earned the win in relief as he pitched 2.1 innings and surrendered an earned run on two hits with three strikeouts.
Starter Nick Duthu earned a no-decision. In 4.2 innings, he surrendered no hits, walked three and fanned 10.
Brandon Fryou finished 1-for-1 with a double and two RBIs to lead the Panthers, while Duthu was 1-for-2 with two RBIs; and Brannon Melancon and Daniel Gray, each 1-for-3, with Melancon adding two RBIs and Gray, an RBI.
On Friday, Berwick defeated Morgan City 6-0.
Gray led Berwick at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance with two doubles and three RBIs, while Bobby Boudreaux also finished 2-for-3. Other top contributors included Fryou, 1-for-3, a double; Duthu, 1-for-4, a double and an RBI; and Theriot, 1-for-4, an RBI.
Andrew Askew earned the win. In four innings, he didn’t surrender a hit, walked one and fanned seven.
Melancon pitched three innings and surrendered two hits, three walks and fanned four.
On Saturday, the Panthers were no hit as they fell to Central Lafourche, 11-0 in six innings.
The Panthers struck out 16 times in the contest and also were plagued in the field as just five of Central Lafourche’s runs were earned.
Tim Shelby suffered the loss as he surrendered four runs — two earned — on four hits with two walks and fanned one in three innings of work.
Berwick (2-1) will return to action today when it hosts Thibodaux. Junior varsity action will begin at 11 a.m. with varsity set to follow at 1 p.m.
Morgan City finishes 1-2 at its tournament
The Morgan City Tigers finished 1-2 this weekend at the A&E Basin Bengal Classic, picking up a dominating 13-3 win against Central Lafourche sandwiched between a pair of shutout losses.
On Saturday, the Tigers defeated Central Lafourche 13-3 in five innings.
Morgan City jumped on Central Lafourche early taking a 7-0 lead in the first inning and extending it to 8-0 after two innings and 12-3 after four innings.
The Tigers plated a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to end the game via mercy rule.
Grant Perry earned the win for the Tigers. In five innings he surrendered three earned runs on six hits with three walks and six strikeouts.
At the plate, Brady Fryou, Matt Lorenzo and Phillip Hutchinson each went 2-for-4 with Fryou adding a two-run home run and Hutchinson and Lorenzo each scoring two runs.
Later Saturday, Thibodaux run-ruled Morgan City 10-0 in six innings, holding the Tigers to one hit.
Thibodaux scored two runs in the first, four in the third, and two each in the fourth and the sixth innings.
Kody Pederson had the Tigers’ lone hit as he finished 1-for-1.
Nick Spinella suffered the loss for Morgan City. In 2.2 innings, he surrendered six runs — four earned — on five hits with two walks and fanned four.
Ethan Scioneaux pitched 3.1 innings of relief, surrendering four runs — two earned — on five hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
On Friday, Morgan City fell to Berwick, 6-0.
The Tigers had just three hits in the contest as Hutchinson, Evan Stadalias and Fryou all finished 1-for-2.
Stadalias suffered the loss on the mound. In three innings, he surrendered five runs on four hits with three walks and fanned two.
In relief, Rhett Fryou pitched four innings and surrendered a run on four hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
Morgan City (1-2) will return to action later in the week when it participates in Berwick’s Panther Classic.
