US 90 wreck takes 4 lives near Centerville

Four persons died and several were injured in a vehicle accident on U.S. 90 near Centerville Saturday.
Louisiana State Police reported that at 11:41 a.m. Ladonna Cheatham, 36, of Patterson, was driving west on U.S. 90 in a 2004 Kia Sorrento. At the same time, a Lafayette Parish school bus was headed east, driven by Amy Dore, 40, of Sunset.
Cheatham’s left rear tire failed, state police information officer Stephen Hammons said. The reason for the failure is under investigation.
Cheatham’s vehicle crossed the median and crashed into the bus.
Killed in the accident were Ladonna Cheatham, Destiny Cheatham, 6; Dwayne Escort, 14, (originally reported as 7 years old); and Marcus Cheatham, 16; all were not wearing seatbelts, were ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Mary Parish Coroner’s Office.
Mark Cheatham, 17, was wearing a seat belt and was transported to a hospital with moderate injuries.
Dore, the bus driver, was not injured. There were 30 students and five aduolts on the bus. One adult sustained moderate injuries and was treated at a hospital. Several students, all teens, were treated for minor injuries.
Lafayette High School Principal Patrick Leonard told news outlets the bus was carrying the school’s baseball team on its way to a scrimmage in Berwick.
Hammons said toxicology samples were obtained and will be tested by the State Police Crime lab.
