’Jacks use big 2nd quarter to top Eagles

The Patterson High School Lumberjacks raced out to a big halftime lead and then held off Central Catholic’s comeback attempt in the second half as the Lumberjacks picked up a 62-52 victory Monday.
While Patterson entered the second quarter leading 14-9, the Lumberjacks exploded for a 27-13 scoring advantage for a 41-23 halftime lead.
Patterson hit seven 3-pointers in the second quarter — including five by Taylon Grogan.
While down, Central Catholic wasn’t done as the Eagles began to cut into the lead in the second half, whittling it to 46-34 after three quarters and in the fourth quarter, had trimmed it to single digits.
However, Patterson was able to withstand the rally and come away with the 10-point victory.
Grogan led Patterson with 15 points, while Daylon Charlot also reached double figures with 11 points. Other top contributors included DJ Jones and Dontrell Benjamin with nine points each; Nehemiah Augustus, eight; and Malik Garrett and Larry Turner, four each.
Nicholas Case led the Eagles with 18 points, including four 3-pointers, while Tyler Hoffpauir had 10 points. Other top contributors included Jalen Johnson and Cedric Gant, nine points each, and Stefano Guarisco, six.
Patterson (17-4 overall, 5-1 in District 9-3A) will return to action today when it travels to face Berwick High in a district contest. Junior varsity boys will begin at 6 p.m. with varsity boys’ action to follow.
Central Catholic (15-11 overall, 9-2 in District 7-1A) will hit the court again Wednesday when it closes out district action at Gueydan in a 5:30 p.m. contest.
