’Jacks win 3rd straight, roll past Southern Lab 40-16

Our quarterback was the key to our offense playing so well tonight.

The Patterson Lumberjacks are rolling.
After starting the season with three straight losses, Patterson has won three straight, including Friday’s pummeling of Southern Lab of Baton Rouge, 40-16, for homecoming.
“I’m proud of the way they handled the distractions of homecoming,” first-year Patterson head coach Chad Blanchard said. “They realized that the game had to be their main focus.”
The ’Jacks opened the game with a 66-yard, three-minute drive that cumulated with a 27-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Sirbatian Charles to standout receiver Daylon Charlot at the 8:19 mark. Christian Soria’s PAT kick gave Patterson a 7-0 lead.
Linebacker Malik Bass began his stellar night with a sack of Lab quarterback Bladrick Veal on the Kittens’ first possession, forcing a punt. Bass had three sacks, a fumble recovery for a touchdown and several tackles.
Patterson’s offense marched downfield again but faced a third-and-23 from the Lab 25-yard line. However, Charles found his other standout receiver, Mykel Jones, for a touchdown and Patterson extended the lead to 14-0 at the 4 minute mark.
After a Lab special team’s miscue gave the Kittens the ball at their own 1-yard line, Bass recovered a Veal fumble in the end zone for a touchdown and a 21-0 lead, giving Patterson its second score in 11 seconds.
After another Kittens turnover, Patterson running back Tristen Ausama darted in for a 4-yard score with 10:56 remaining in the second quarter to extend the lead to 27-0.
Lab finally got its offense going on the next possession, scoring on a 14-yard run by Darbbeon Profit. The Kittens added a two-point conversion but trailed 27-8 at the 8:18 mark of the second quarter.
Prior to the scoring drive, Lab had minus 23 yards of offense.
Patterson answered right away when Nehemiah Augustus took a screen pass from Charles and raced 64-yards for a touchdown to push the lead to 33-8 with 7:22 remaining before the half.
Charles finished the game 9-of-17 passing for 230 yards with three touchdowns and an interception.
Jones had three catches for 50 yards and a score, while Charlot had one catch for 27 yards and a touchdown.
Southern Lab (1-5) added a short touchdown run by Veal and a two-point conversion at the 3:13 mark of the second quarter but trailed at the half, 33-16.
“Our quarterback was the key to our offense playing so well tonight,” Blanchard said. “He knew all week that they were going to blitz us and send more people than we could block. He had a great week of practice, and that’s the kind of kid he is. He’s a competitor and he knew it was gonna be a physical game for him, and he faced it head on. I’m very proud of him and all the guys.”
Charles added a 6-yard touchdown run with 2:34 remaining in the game. He carried 10 times for 90 yards and a touchdown. John Davis had 35 yards on nine carries for Patterson, while Ausama had 16 totes for 26 yards and a score.
Patterson (3-3, 0-0) will open District 9-3A play this Friday at home against Donaldsonville (3-3, 0-1). Donaldsonville lost to E.D. White 25-24 in district play Friday.
“It’s the second season now, but actually it’s more like the third season for us,” Blanchard said. “The first three games, we washed those out of the books. Our next three was our second season, and now it’s the third season, district, and (I) think the guys are motivated and focused.”
