Acadiana repeats as Class 5A champion

The Acadiana Wreckin’ Rams captured their second consecutive state championship and their fourth crown since 2006 with a 23-7 victory over Destrehan in 2014 Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA Class 5A State Championship Game Saturday night.
Breaking out to an early 14-0 lead, Acadiana (11-4) got on the scoreboard near the end of the first quarter on a 37-yard touchdown pass from Kevin Moore to Bry’kiethon Mouton. Eric Duhon’s two-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter extended the lead to 14-7.
Brodie Fontenot added field goals of 24 and 31 yards in the third quarter to extend the lead to 20-7.
Going for their first state championship since back-to-back titles in 2007 and 2008, Destrehan saw their undefeated season end with a 14-1 record.
The Wildcats lone score came in the first half on a two-yard touchdown run by Kohen Granier.
Neville wins
Class 4A title
The Neville Tigers captured the school’s 11th state championship with a 28-27 win over Warren Easton in the 2014 Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA Class 4A State Championship on Saturday night.
Scoring 21 unanswered points after falling behind 13-0, senior running back Kavonte Turpin had rushing touchdowns of 1 and 63 yards. J.T. Jackson also connected with Chris Fuller for a 13-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter to extend the lead to 21-13.
Turpin added a 37-yard touchdown reception midway through the fourth quarter to make it 28-13
Warren Easton got on the scoreboard in the first quarter on a 75-yard punt return for a touchdown and a 43-yard touchdown pass from Deshawn Capers-Smith to Darren Holmes.
The win for Neville (13-1) is the Tigers’ third state championship in the past six years. Seeking their first state championship since the 1942 season, Warren Easton finished with a 12-3 record.
Livonia beats Amite
for Class 3A title
Two first-half touchdown passes by quarterback Cee Jay Powell powered top-seeded Livonia over No. 3 Amite, 43-14, in the 2014 Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA Class 3A State Championship game.
The Wildcats (14-0) took a 7-0 lead on a 1-yard touchdown run by Powell, but a 53-yard touchdown run by Kenner Harrell brought Amite (12-3) ahead 8-7.
Powell connected with Kendrick Paul for a touchdown pass from nine yards and on Livonia’s next possession hit Stephen Guidry for a 4-yard touchdown pass and 21-8 halftime score.
Their first second-half possession extended the lead with a Powell’s 4-yard pass to Paul.
It was Livonia’s first 11-man football state championship. The school had to forfeit last year’s runner-up trophy because of an ineligible player.
Many defeats Kinder 22-15 for 2A crown
In a rematch of their state championship game from a year ago, the Many Tigers defeated the Kinder Yellow Jackets 22-15 in the 2014 Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA State 2A Championship game Friday night.
Trailing 15-14 late in the fourth quarter, Kentrell Maxie capped off a four-play, 25-yard drive with a 5-yard touchdown. Quarterback Xavier Dias added the two-point conversion that gave the Tigers (15-0) the 22-15 lead.
Kinder (13-1) took a 15-8 lead in the third quarter on a 3-yard touchdown run by Zach Rider followed by quarterback Welles Cooley’s PAT run.
Many would cut the lead to 15-14 after a 46-yard touchdown pass from Dias to Tabarius Garner, but the two-point conversion attempt failed.
The Tigers took an early 8-7 lead in the first quarter when Dias connected with Isaiah Smith for a 23-yard. touchdown and a two-point conversion pass to Pqawn Williams.
Haynesville shuts out Mangham for 1A title
Two first-quarter touchdowns proved to be the difference as Haynesville defeated Mangham, 16-0 in the 2014 Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA Class 1A State Championship game Friday night in New Orleans.
Senior James Jackson returned a blocked field goal 73 yards for a touchdown. Later Keandre Harris returned a Mangham punt 86 yards for the second score.
The Haynesville defense shut out a Mangham team that was averaging nearly 45 points a game.
In a rematch of the Class 1A title game from a year ago, Haynesville (13-1) captured the school’s 17th state championship, second only to John Curtis in state championships.
The top-seeded team in the Class 1A bracket, Mangham also finished the season with a 13-1 record. They were seeking their first state championship since 1956.
