Area softball tournaments begin Friday

Two softball tournaments will be held this weekend as Berwick High hosts its annual Lady Panther Classic and Patterson High puts on the Ned Stephens Memorial Tournament.
Both will begin Friday and continue Saturday.
Three of the four Tri-City area teams will participate in the Lady Panther Classic. In addition to host Berwick, Morgan City and Central Catholic will compete.
Additionally, Captain Shreve, Assumption, Ascension Catholic, Teurlings Catholic, St. Charles, Cecilia, Vandebilt Catholic, New Iberia, Catholic High-New Iberia and Kaplan all will compete.
Several of these teams made trips to the state softball tournament in their respective classes a year ago as Vandebilt Catholic was Class 4A runner-up, while Ascension Catholic was Class 1A runner-up.
Meanwhile, Central Catholic was a Class 1A semifinalist and Kaplan, a Class 3A quarter-finalist.
Action will be played at Berwick High as well as two fields at the Berwick Civic Complex.
Local action includes Berwick meeting Captain Shreve at 3 p.m. Friday at Berwick High, while Cecilia will face Central Catholic at 7 p.m. on Field 4 at the Berwick Civic Complex Friday. Morgan City and Berwick will meet at 7 p.m. on Field 5 at the civic complex.
On Saturday, Berwick and St. Charles will meet at 11 a.m. at Berwick High, while on Field 4 at the Berwick Civic Complex Cecilia will play Morgan City at 11 a.m., Central Catholic will meet St. Charles at 3 p.m., and Berwick will play Kaplan at 5 p.m.
On Field 5 at the Berwick Civic Complex Saturday Central Catholic will meet New Iberia at 11 a.m. and Morgan City will face Catholic High at 3 p.m.

Meanwhile, Patterson’s tournament will consist of nine teams playing on two fields at the Bayou Vista Community Center.
In addition to host Patterson, other teams scheduled to participate include Ellender, Highland Baptist, Centerville, Covenant Christian, Loreauville, French Settlement and Houma Christian.
Ellender was a Class 4A quarterfinalist a year ago.
Patterson will meet Loreauville on Field 2 at 3:30 p.m., while they also play Fisher at 7:30 p.m. on Field 1.
On Saturday, Patterson and Covenant Christian will play on Field 2 at 10 a.m., while Patterson and Highland Baptist will meet at 2 p.m. on Field 2.
