Barbier’s RBI single lifts CCHS past Vermilion Catholic

Central Catholic junior Mathew Barbier went 4-for-4 in Wednesday’s contest against Vermilion Catholic but his biggest of those hits was his final swing.
Barbier knocked in the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh innings with an RBI single as Central Catholic, ranked No. 1 in the latest unofficial Louisiana High School Athletic Association power rankings, edged No. 5 Vermilion Catholic, 4-3.
The dramatic finish came after Vermilion Catholic had plated the tying and go-ahead runs in the top of the frame.
All of the scoring came in the last three innings of Wednesday’s contest as Central Catholic took the lead first with a run in the bottom of the fifth, while each team scored a run in the sixth for a 2-1 Central Catholic advantage.
Besides Barbier, other top contributors for the Eagles included Barron Courtney, 2-for-2, a double, an RBI and a stolen base; and Samuel Guarisco, an RBI, a stolen base and a run.
Guarisco earned the complete-game victory. In seven innings, he surrendered three earned runs on seven hits with three walks and fanned eight.
Central Catholic stranded nine runners on base in the win.
On Tuesday, Central Catholic opened District 7-1A action with a 17-1 win against Highland Baptist in five innings.
The Eagles plated five runs in the first inning, one in the second and 11 in the third.
Highland Baptist’s lone run was scored in the fifth inning.
Central Catholic pounded out 16 hits in the win, led by Sage Thibodaux’s 3-for-3 performance with four RBIs, a stolen base and a run.

Barron limited Highland Baptist to three hits. In five innings, he surrendered an earned run and fanned four.
The Eagles (13-2 overall, 2-0 in district) will return to action Saturday when they play at Hanson Memorial in a 5 p.m. contest.
Morgan City routs
Ellender
The Morgan City Tigers routed Ellender Memorial in the Tigers’ District 7-4A opener with a 10-0 win in six innings Tuesday in Morgan City.
The Tigers plated three runs in the second, two in the third, four in the fifth and one in the sixth.
Brady Fryou and Phillip Hutchinson each had two RBI-doubles in the win, while Matt Lorenzo’s RBI double in the bottom of the sixth scored Evan Stadalis to end the ball game via mercy rule.
Nick Spinella earned the win for the Tigers. In five innings, he surrendered four hits, two walks and fanned three.
Ethan Scioneaux also pitched an inning of relief and fanned one.
Stadalis led the Tigers at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance with three runs scored, while Scott Comeaux was 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Fryou and Hutchinson, each 1-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Other top contributors included Matt Lorenzo, 1-for-3, a double and an RBI; and Cameron Marcantel, 1-for-3 with an RBI.
In junior varsity action, Morgan City (4-1) defeated Ellender 4-0.
Comeaux earned the win for Morgan City.
Morgan City (5-8 overall, 1-0 in district) will continue District 7-4A play Thursday at South Terrebonne.
Patterson tops Riverside
The Patterson Lumberjacks picked up a 6-2 win against Riverside in Reserve Tuesday.
The ‘Jacks outhit Riverside 10-4 and overcame four errors for the victory.
“I thought this was a fantastic win to go on the road and beat a traditional power like Riverside,” Patterson coach Ryan Jensen said. “I was very pleased with our effort and thought we really competed hard. I was disappointed in our base running, execution of sacrifice bunts and dealing with the win on some fly balls, but we managed to stay composed and play through those mistakes. I think that says a lot about who we are hopefully growing into.”
Kenny Singleton led the Lumberjacks with a 3-for-4 performance, while Brennan Gouaux was 2-for-2 with a double, an RBI and a run, and Spencer Landry, 2-for-4, two RBIs. Other top contributors included Taylor Harris, 1-for-2, an RBI and a run; Tyrik Singleton, 1-for-2, an RBI; and Jake Lagrange, 1-for-4, a double.
Singleton earned the win for the Lumberjacks. In a complete-game effort, he surrendered two runs — one earned — on four hits with three walks and fanned four.
“Kenny was great on the mound and really controlled the game,” Jensen said. “He put us in a position to make plays and get out of some jams.”
Patterson (10-6) will return to action Thursday when it hosts Cecilia at 5 p.m.
Berwick rolls
past Franklin
The Berwick Panthers defeated Franklin 26-1 in a three-inning contest Tuesday in Franklin in the Panthers’ District 9-3A opener.
The game was called after the third inning by mutual agreement of Franklin and Berwick coaches, Berwick assistant coach Lud Henry said.
Berwick jumped out to a 10-0 lead after the first inning and added eight more runs each in the second and third frames.
Franklin plated its run in the bottom of the third.
Berwick pounded out 23 hits in the win and limited Franklin to two hits.
The Hornets also committed six errors.
Berwick’s Nick Duthu finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs, while Bobby Boudreaux was 2-for-2 with a home run and four RBIs. Other top contributors included Justin Morvant, 2-for-3, two triples and three RBIs; Neal Theriot, 2-for-3, a triple and two RBIs; Brooks Richard, 2-for-3, a double and two RBIs; Braden Billiot, 2-for-2, two RBIs; Micah Soileau, 2-for-2, an RBI; Chet Aucoin, 2-for-2, an RBI; Cameron Wiley and Brandon Fryou, each 1-for-1 with a double and an RBI; Tanner Caldwell, 1-for-1, an RBI; and Daniel Gray, 1-for-3, an RBI.
Duthu earned the win for the Panthers. In two innings, he surrendered two hits and fanned two.
Berwick (11-5 overall, 1-0) and Franklin will play the second game in their District 9-3A annual matchup today at 5 p.m. in Berwick.
