Berwick boys place 2nd at district meet

Berwick High School’s boys track and field team finished second in team scoring at the District 8-3A meet at E.D. White Tuesday.

The Panthers totaled 98 points, finishing behind E.D. White, which accumulated 157 points.

Bewick’s Kenan Jones was named the meet’s Field MVP. Jones won the long jump with a leap of 22 feet, 6 inches, the triple jump with a mark of 44 feet, 8 inches and finished second in the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 4 inches. The long jump mark by Jones broke the Berwick High School mark of 22 feet, 0.5 inches set by Daniel Moore in 1986.

Jones qualified for the regional meet in all three events.

Combined, Berwick’s boys and girls teams qualified competitors in 11 events for regionals, while combined, Patterson’s boys and girls teams qualified competitors in the same number of events.

The regional meet will be held April 28 at Abbeville High School.

Berwick’s Ian Valdez also finished first in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 10:16.46 and third in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:44.72.

Other Berwick qualifiers included Josh Carver in the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 4 inches; Tyus Jones, second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:04.72; Orry Arcemont, second in the javelin with a toss of 162 feet; Alvin Jones, third in the 400-meter run with a time of 52.35; Audwin Williams, who finished fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 41 feet, 6 inches; and Berwick’s 4x400-meter relay. The team of Alvin Jones, Larenz Clark, Tyus Jones and Barret Hover finished fourth at district with a time of 3:32.85.

In team scoring, Patterson’s boys finished sixth with 44 points.

The Lumberjacks qualified several competitors for regionals, led by Ian Hayes in the 110-meter hurdles, who finished second in the district meet at 16.75.

Other qualifiers for Patterson included D.J. Jones, fourth in the long jump with a leap of 21 feet, 5 inches; Shea Ragas, fourth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 44.06; and Zachary Burke, fourth in the discus with a toss of 111 feet, nine inches.

Patterson’s 4x100-meter relay, 4x200-meter relay and 4x400-meter relay all qualified for the regional meet. The Lumberjacks 4x100 relay of Dylan Giandealone, Mykel Jones, D.J. Jones and Shea Ragas clocked in with a time of 44.12, while its 4x200 relay of Giandalone, Mykel Jones, D.J. Jones and Desabrian Benjamin finished third with a mark of 1:33.

Patterson’s 4x400-meter relay of Hayes, Anthony Gant, Benjamin and Giandelone placed third with a time of 3:31.73.

On the girls side, Patterson finished sixth in team scoring with 21 points and seventh with 14.5 points.

Individual Patterson qualifiers for regionals included Aaliyah Stewart, third in the shot put with a toss of 30 feet, 11 inches; and fourth in the javelin with an 82 foot, 2 inch effort; and Ireniesha Kinchen, fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.66.

Berwick’s Ashton Morales qualified in the high jump after finishing third in district with a leap of 4 feet, 8 inches.
