Berwick falls to St. Amant 6-5 in eight innings

Berwick High School’s upset bid at St. Amant fell short Tuesday as the Gators scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning for a 6-5 victory.
While St. Amant tied the game at five in the bottom of the seventh inning on an RBI-double against Berwick starter Neal Theriot, reliever D.J. Robicheaux recorded the final two outs to strand a runner at second.
However, in the bottom of the eighth inning, St. Amant plated the winning run on a sacrifice fly. The winning run was set up by a walk, a wild pitch and two intentional walks.
Robicheaux suffered the loss for the Panthers. In 1.1 innings of work, he surrendered one earned run with three walks (two intentional).
Theriot surrendered three runs to St. Amant in the bottom of the first inning. He bounced back and gave up just two more runs the remainder of the game.
In 6.1 innings, he surrendered five earned runs on 13 hits with three walks, one hit batter and three strikeouts.
During his time on the mound, Theriot escaped several jams.
After St. Amant’s three-run first inning, Berwick countered with single runs in the second and third innings to cut its deficit to 3-2.
While St. Amant plated another run in the bottom of the third, Berwick plated a run apiece in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to take a 5-4 lead.
Berwick got timely hitting in the game, plating five runs on only five hits.
Theriot led the Panthers with a 2-for-4 performance with an RBI, while Bradley Gray was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Robicheaux and Cameron Wiley, each 1-for-4 with an RBI.
St. Amant, a Class 5A semifinalist a year ago, overcame three errors for the victory.
Berwick (10-5) will return to action Friday when it opens play in Lutcher’s tournament.
Central Catholic falls
to St. Michael
St. Michael scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally past Central Catholic, 5-3, at home Tuesday.
While St. Michael took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, Central Catholic responded with three runs in the top of the third.
Neither team plated another run until St. Michael’s outburst in the bottom of the sixth.
Matthew Barbier suffered the loss. In 5.1 innings of work, he surrendered five runs — three earned — on six hits with five walks and four strikeouts.
In 0.2 innings of relief, Patrick Barron surrendered just a hit.
St. Michael outhit Central Catholic 7-6 but left 11 runners on base. Central Catholic committed three errors.
Offensively, top hitters for Central Catholic were Barron, 1-for-2 with an RBI; Mitchell Lemoine, 1-for-3 with an RBI; and Barbier, 1-for-4, an RBI and a run.
Central Catholic (8-2) will return to action Thursday when it participates in E.D. White’s tournament. The Eagles will face Thibodaux at 3:30 p.m. and South Lafourche at 6:30 p.m.
