Berwick falls to Thibodaux

The Berwick Panthers dug themselves a hole early and couldn’t recover in an 8-3 loss to Thibodaux at home Monday.
Berwick coach Mike Thomas said his squad gave up three unearned runs in the first inning, which hurt the squad’s strategy of bunting and hitting and running to generate offense.
“Against good teams, you can’t get behind,” he said.
While he said he liked his squad’s pitching, Thomas said the Panthers need to do a better job at the plate and clean up errors in the field.
The Panthers made four errors in the contest.
However, with the season still in its infancy, Thomas said he was confident his squad would come around.
Daniel Gray led the Panthers with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate.
Nick Duthu suffered the loss for the Panthers.
Berwick (2-2) will return to action Thursday in its annual Panther Classic when it takes on Ellender at 4:30 p.m. in the day’s only game.

Baker comes back to
beat Patterson
Baker High School overcame a 6-0 deficit with 19 runs in the final four innings to defeat Patterson High, 19-11, Monday in Patterson.
While Patterson led 6-0 after three innings and 8-2 after four innings, Baker plated nine runs in the fifth to take the lead for good at 11-8.
The visitors added eight more runs in the top of the seventh inning for a commanding 19-9 lead before Patterson scored two runs in its final at bat.
The loss was the Lumberjacks’ first of the season as the squad slipped to 3-1 this season.
“This was one of the strangest games I’ve ever been a part of in my life,” Patterson head coach Ryan Jensen said. “For the first (three) innings, we were well in control and then all of (a) sudden, they woke up and really hit the baseball incredibly hard. We just couldn’t get them out in the (fifth). Our defense certainly didn’t help our cause either.”
The Lumberjacks committed seven errors and surrendered eight unearned runs.
Jensen said he thought the turning point in the game was when Patterson had the bases loaded in the bottom of the third and were up 6-0 but couldn’t score any more.
“We never delivered a knockout blow in those early innings to put them away and once they gained a little confidence, they put on a pretty impressive display of hitting. Hopefully this gives our guys an example of why you can’t relax with the lead and you have to continue to play the game at your highest level no matter the score because you never know what can happen.”
Jamey Fabre took the loss in relief of starter Kenny Singleton. In one inning, Fabre surrendered five unearned runs on four hits with a walk and fanned two.
Singleton started the contest and went four innings, surrendering six earned runs on seven hits with three walks and fanned two.
At the plate, Joel Singleton finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Spencer Landry was 2-for-4. Other top contributors included Tyrik Singleton, 1-for-3, 2 RBIs; Sean Stewart, 1-for-1, an RBI; and Taylor Harris, 2 RBIs.
Patterson will return to action Thursday when it begins play in Hanson Memorial’s tournament with a 4 p.m. contest against Highland Baptist.
