Berwick looks to rebound versus Highland Baptist
Berwick hopes to clean up mistakes after a one-point loss to Delcambre Friday.
Turnovers and penalties doomed the Panthers as they dropped the opener, 14-13.
Berwick fumbled the ball away on its first two offensive drives, which Delcambre converted into touchdowns for a quick 14-0 lead.
“We did what we always seem to do: get down early and have to fight back,” third-year Berwick coach Craig Brodie said. “We continue to shoot ourselves in the foot, and we can’t do that and win.”
Berwick (0-1) climbed its way back into the game, cutting the deficit to 14-13 late in the second quarter.
Neither team could muster any more scoring.
Berwick quarterback Jeremy Boudreaux hit Audwin Williams for a 12-yard touchdown and Draylan West had a 7-yard run for a score for Berwick.
Boudreaux was 7-of-12 passing for 71 yards and a touchdown. Williams led the receivers with four catches for 42-yards and a touchdown. Kenan Jones had two catches for 20 yards while West had one catch for nine yards.
Marquis Rogers was the leading rusher for Berwick with four carries for 33 yards. Braden Billiot carried five times for 31 yards, while Boudreaux carried 11 times for 17-yards. West had two carries for five yards and a touchdown.
“We have to just keep getting better every week,” Brodie said. “The effort is there, and we’re getting closer.”
Highland Baptist (1-0) beat Houma Christian 34-14 Friday.
Highland Baptist produced four touchdowns in the second half to overcome a 14-6 halftime deficit.
Gary Roberts and Brontre Griffin each had touchdowns for Highland Baptist in the third quarter, while Peyton Theriot and Chandler Mixon scored in the final period.
Roberts accounted for Highland Baptist’s first-half points with a score.
Berwick lost a heartbreaker to Highland Baptist last season in a driving rainstorm.
“We played well against Highland Baptist last season,” Brodie said. “We had 500 yards of total offense and 20 first downs.”
“But turnovers hurt us in that game as well,” he said. “We have to clean up the penalties and turnovers to get a win.”
Friday’s kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Geisler Stadium.
