Big 4th quarter lifts ’Jacks past Tigers

The Patterson Lumberjacks used a big fourth quarter to defeat Morgan City, 54-49.
Trailing 32-26 entering the fourth quarter, Patterson outscored Morgan City 28-17 in the final quarter.
The Lumberjacks led 50-49 late in the game’s final minute on a bucket by Nehemiah Augustus following a turnover by Morgan City’s Makye Richard when he lost control of the basketball out of bounds.
Patterson extended its lead to 52-49 with less than a minute remaining on two free throws by Taylan Grogan after Morgan City was assessed a technical foul coming out of a timeout for having six players on the court instead of five.
With Morgan City forced to foul late, Grogan sank two more free throws to extend its lead to 54-49 with 6.7 seconds left.
While Morgan City had a chance to cut into the lead seconds later, Morgan City’s Tywaun Walker could not convert the front-end of a 1-and-1, and Patterson’s Malik Garret got the rebound and was fouled, sealing the victory.
Morgan City led 9-3 after the first quarter, while Patterson responded with a 13-8 scoring advantage in the second quarter to cut its halftime deficit to 17-16.
The Tigers came out of the break with a 15-10 scoring advantage to extend its lead after three quarters.
Jordan Butler, Grogan and Augustus each had nine to lead Patterson, while Kenneth Washington had eight; Tyric Garrett, seven; Mykel Jones, six; Malik Garrett, four; and D.J. Jones, two.
Richard led Morgan City with 11 points.
Other scorers for the Tigers included Walker with nine; Marvin Young and Brady Fryou, eight each; Jaylen Jones, seven; Lloyd Singleton, four; and Taaj Daniels, two.
Patterson (7-4) will return to action Tuesday when it travels to face West St. Mary in a 6 p.m. contest.
Meanwhile, Morgan City (9-6) will host Grace King Tuesday. Junior varsity action will begin at 6 p.m. with varsity to follow at approximately 7 p.m.
Central Catholic defeats Vermilion Catholic
The Central Catholic Eagles defeated Vermilion Catholic, 48-29, in Abbeville Friday.
While the score was tied at 8 after the first quarter and Central Catholic led just 22-17 at halftime, the visitors from Morgan City used a 14-3 scoring advantage in the third quarter to take a 36-20 lead after three quarters.
Central Catholic outscored Vermilion Catholic 12-9 in the fourth quarter for the final margin.
Samarick Paul and Stefano Guarisco each had 12 points for Central Catholic, while Charlie Solar contributed 10.
In junior varsity action, Central Catholic defeated Vermilion Catholic 40-35.
Elijah Swan led the Eagles with 17 points, while Demarcus Mitchell added 14.
Central Catholic (5-8 overall, 2-0 in district) will continue District 7-1A play Tuesday when it hosts Hanson Memorial. Junior varsity action will begin at 5 p.m., while the varsity boys’ game will follow the varsity girls’ contest at approximately 7 p.m.
Berwick falls to
North Vermilion
The Berwick Panthers fell to North Vermilion 47-38 in nondistrict action Friday on the road.
Berwick got off to a rough start as the Panthers trailed 10-3 after the first quarter and went into the half down 30-15.
Berwick cut into its deficit after the third quarter to 38-26 after three quarter and had its deficit down to 40-35 in the fourth quarter with two minutes remaining.
However, North Vermilion pulled away for the win.
Audwin Williams led Berwick with 10 points.
Other scorers for Berwick included Dralyn West, nine; Kenan Jones, eight; and Donald Tillman, four.
Berwick (7-7) will return to action Tuesday when it travels to face Highland Baptist. Junior varsity action will begin at 5:30 p.m. with varsity to follow at about 6:30 p.m.
