Cardinals top Berwick 55-33 Friday

By DWAYNE FATHERREE, The Houma Courier

If E.D. White Catholic football coach Chris Bergeron needs at least a three-touchdown lead to feel comfortable, then Friday night’s game against the Berwick Panthers is about as content as he ever can expect to get during a game.
The Cardinals cruised to a 55-33 District 8-3A victory against Berwick.
But even with the decisive victory, Bergeron sees room for improvement.
“There were some points in the game where we didn’t do some things well,” he said. “We didn’t tackle well in the open field. We didn’t cover kicks very
well, so those are things we have to get cleaned up by next week.”
The Cardinals (6-3 overall, 4-1 in district) came out ready to score. Running back Brandon Legendre took the initial kickoff back 80 yards for a touchdown.
Then, after a three-and-out series for the Panthers (3-6 overall, 1-4 in district), E.D. White started putting the game out of reach. Cardinals running
back Jeremy Rounds scored three touchdowns in the first quarter and two more in the second.
Rounds finished the game with 18 carries for 308 yards and six touchdowns.
“Jeremy was special,” Bergeron said. “Other than the 298- yard performance by Dylan Ledet against Marksville, that might be the best individual performance I have seen in 16 years.”
E.D. White totaled 535 yards of offense (526 rushing, nine passing).
Berwick coach Craig Brodie said giving up 14 points in the first three minutes of the game and not doing anything on offense early “makes it tough on you.”
However, the Panthers’ offense got on the scoreboard in the first quarter on a catch by wide receiver Kenan Jones from quarterback Collin Louviere.
Audwin Williams caught two second-quarter touchdown passes.
A missed extra point left the score at 42-20 at the half.
Williams had three catches for 109 yards and two touchdowns, while Jones had four catches for 108 yards and a score.
E.D. White’s dominance in the first half came from a strong, attacking defense. Louviere had little time to set up and throw to his receivers, with Cardinals defender Winston Jones one of several defenders keeping constant pressure on the Panthers throughout the night.
“Winnie played well,” Bergeron said, “but we have to play well consistently. We played well in spurts.”
Rounds scored again for the Cardinals in the third quarter after a Panthers fumble gave E.D. White possession of the ball deep in Berwick territory.
Two plays later, Rounds took a short reverse and ran it down the right hash mark for a score to make it 49-20.
The Panthers fired back, putting together a drive based on a 27-yard catch to Kenan Jones and aided when a Cardinals defender was called for defensive
holding. Louviere ran the ball in, bringing the score to 49-27 at the end of the third quarter.
Louviere completed 5-of-13 passes for 86 yards with a touchdown and an interception, while he rushed 16 times for 76 yards and a score.
He topped 1,000 yards passing for the season as he now has 1,011 yards.
Legendre got his second score of the game early in the fourth quarter after a 19-yard run from running back Nik Shanklin ignited the drive, pushing the Cardinals into Panthers territory. Legendre capped the drive with a 20-yard scamper for the score.
Shanklin finished the game with 15 carries for 127 yards, while Legendre had six carries for 84 yards and a score.
“They have a lot of athletes at the skill position,” Brodie said. “They have four running backs, maybe four of the five top running backs in the whole district.”
Berwick did not give up, however. The next series had Louviere taking the ball on a 15-yard run to the Cardinals 1-yard line. Two plays later, he left the field under his own power after being injured trying to get that last yard. It was up to backup Mitchell Sanford to complete a pass to receiver Cody Roberie to score the touchdown, but another missed extra-point left the score at 55-33.
Sanford completed 9-of-12 passes for 154 yards and three touchdowns to lead Berwick.
Brodie said that Louviere is OK and will play this week.
Berwick finished the game with 381 yards of total offense (141 rushing, 240 passing).
