CCHS clinches District 7-1A crown

Central Catholic finished the weekend 3-0 in District 7-1A action with two wins against Ascension Episcopal and a win against Hanson to capture the District 7-1A championship.
The Eagles knocked off Ascension Episcopal, 13-10, in a game that began Wednesday in Amelia and was concluded Saturday in Youngsville.
In the game that followed soon after in Youngsville, the Eagles edged Ascension Episcopal, 6-5, in 10 innings.
The Eagles also picked up a 12-1 victory against Hanson. The game, which originally was set for April 14 in Franklin, was rescheduled for April 20 in Franklin.
With Central Catholic ahead 12-1 in the bottom of the third, the game was halted due to inclement weather. It never resumed, but the Eagles were awarded the victory.
Central Catholic outhit Hanson, 8-4.
Mitchell Lemoine led Central Catholic with a 3-for-3 performance with two RBIs. Other top offensive contributors included Stefano Guarisco, 2-for-2, a home run, two RBIs and three runs; Gregory Leger, 2-for-3, a double, three RBIs and a run; Charlie Solar, 1-for-3, an RBI and a run; Drake Angeron and Samuel Guarisco, each an RBI and two runs; and Thomas Garber, an RBI and a run.
Blake Hidalgo earned the win. In two innings, he surrendered one earned run on four hits with three walks and fanned two.
In game one, Central Catholic answered an Ascension Episcopal scoring outburst in the top of the sixth inning with one of their own in the bottom of the frame en route to the come-from-behind 13-10 win.
While Central Catholic led 6-3 after five innings, Ascension Episcopal scored seven runs in the top of the sixth inning for a 10-6 advantage.
However, Central Catholic scored seven runs in the bottom of the frame for the victory.
Early on, Central Catholic took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Each team scored two runs in the fourth inning, while Ascension Episcopal scored a run in the top of the fourth.
Central Catholic outhit Ascension Episcopal, 15-4, but Central Catholic left 11 runners on base.
However, four Central Catholic batters were hit by a pitch and six reached base via a walk.
Samuel Guarisco, the final of three Central Catholic pitchers used, earned the victory. In 1.1 innings, he surrendered two walks and fanned three.
Gregory Leger started the contest for Central Catholic. In four innings, he surrendered two runs — one earned — on one hit with six walks and five strikeouts.
While the trio of Leger, Hidalgo and Guarisco combined for 10 strikeouts, they also totaled 13 walks.
Just three of Ascension Episcopal’s runs were earned as the Eagles committed five errors. Ascension Episcopal also stole seven bases.
Lemoine led Central Catholic with a 4-for-4 performance with three runs. In game two against Ascension Episcopal, Barron’s RBI single in the top of the 10th scored Lemoine for what proved to be the winning run in Central Catholic’s 6-5 victory. Lemoine had reached base on a single two batters earlier.
While Ascension Episcopal took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, Central Catholic rallied in the fourth with a run and added two more in the fifth to tie the game at 3.
Each team scored a run in the sixth to force extra innings with the game tied at 4.
Both teams scored a run in the eighth before Central Catholic pushed across the winning run in the top of the ninth.
Ascension Episcopal left 13 runners on base, while Central Catholic stranded eight.
Central Catholic overcame five errors for the victory.
Ascension Episcopal outhit Central Catholic, 10-8, but Central Catholic connected on four doubles.
The Eagles also stole six bases.
Thomas Mire, the third of three pitchers Central Catholic used, earned the win. In six innings of relief, he surrendered two runs — one earned — on six hits with two walks, two hit batters and three strikeouts.
Samuel Guarisco started the game for Central Catholic. In two innings, he surrendered three runs — two earned — on two hits with one walk, one hit batter and one strikeout.
Offensively, Lemoine led Central Catholic with a 3-for-5 performance with two doubles, an RBI and a run. Other top contributors included Angeron, 2-for-5, a double, two RBIs, a stolen base and a run; Barron, 1-for-4, an RBI and a run; Gregory Leger, 1-for-5, a double; and Stefano Guarisco and Samuel Guarisco, each with an RBI and a stolen base.
Central Catholic (23-4 overall, 13-1 in district) will return to action Tuesday when it hosts Logansport in Class 1A first-round playoff action. Central Catholic is the No. 1 seed in Class 1A, while Logansport is the No. 32 seed. First pitch in Amelia is set for 5:30 p.m.
Patterson sweeps doubleheader
The Patterson Lumberjacks swept a District 8-3A doubleheader with Franklin in a pair of games called after three innings Friday.
Patterson won 16-1 and 15-0.
The wins snapped a four-game losing streak and a nine-game District 8-3A skid with a doubleheader sweep of Franklin at Patterson Friday.
In game one, Franklin scored a run in the top of the first, but Patterson came back with five runs in the bottom of the frame, seven more in the second, and four in the third for the 16-1 final.
Patterson outhit Franklin, 13-3, while Franklin committed seven errors.
Brennan Gouaux led Patterson with a 3-for-3 performance with a double, a triple, an RBI and three runs. Other top contributors included Brad Beaubouef, 2-for-3, two doubles, three RBIs and two runs; Blake Dreyer, 2-for-3, three RBIs and three runs; Joel Singleton, 2-for-3, and two RBIs; Tyrik Singleton, 2-for-3, an RBI and two runs; Bryce Beaubouef, 1-for-2, an RBI and two runs; Matt Dardeau, an RBI, two runs and a stolen base; and Marcus Vining, an RBI and a stolen base.
Tyrik Singleton earned the win. In three innings, he surrendered one earned run on three hits with one hit batter and four strikeouts.
In game two, Patterson scored all 15 runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Patterson outhit Franklin, 13-2.
Dreyer led Patterson with a 2-for-2 performance with a triple, two RBIs and two runs. Other top contributors included Brad Beaubouef and Joel Singleton, each 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs; Fabre, 2-for-3, two RBIs, two stolen bases and two runs; Bryce Beaubouef, 1-for-2, a double, two RBIs and two runs; Dardeau, 1-for-2, two RBIs and a run; Tyrik Singleton, 1-for-2, an RBI and two runs; Vining, 1-for-2, and an RBI; and Gouaux, 1-for-2, a double, a stolen base and two runs.
Joel Singleton, the first of four pitchers used, earned the win. In one inning, he fanned two.
Patterson (12-16 overall, 3-9 in district) will return to action today when it opens Class 3A postseason play. Patterson, the No. 26 seed, will travel to play No. 7 North Webster. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
Berwick sweeps
North Vermilion
The Berwick Panthers swept North Vermilion in District 8-3A action in Berwick Friday.
Berwick won the first game, 13-11, in 11 innings and took the second game, 5-4.
The first game was played over three days and at one time or another had been pegged to be played at multiple different locations.
Originally the game was set to be played at North Vermilion but was moved to Sellers Field where Vermilion Catholic plays due to inclement weather.
In the first part of the game played Wednesday, Berwick took a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the second when the game was halted due to rain and postponed.
It picked up a day later in Patterson but was halted again in the bottom of the eighth inning with the score tied at 8 in the bottom of the eighth and the winning run on second base for North Vermilion.
Berwick got out of the jam but the score remained tied at 8 until the top of the 11th when Berwick plated five runs.
North Vermilion scored three runs in the bottom of the frame but could get no closer.
North Vermilion outhit Berwick, 12-8.
Berwick overcame five errors, while North Vermilion committed four miscues.
Collin Kulka earned the win. In 1.2 innings, he surrendered three runs — all earned — on three hits with one strikeout.
Cameron Wiley led Berwick with a 3-for-4 performance. Other top offensive contributors included Andrew Askew, 1-for-3, a triple and three RBIs; Kyle Pitre, 1-for-2, and an RBI; Cody Roberie 1-for-4, and an RBI; and Tanner Caldwell, 1-for-6, and an RBI.
In game two, North Vermilion took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but Berwick responded with four runs in the bottom of the frame.
While North Vermilion cut its deficit to 4-3 in the top of the fifth, Berwick extended its lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the frame.
North Vermilion scored its final run in the top of the sixth inning.
North Vermilion outhit Berwick, 8-6.
Bradley Gray led Berwick with a 2-for-4 performance with a double, a home run and four RBIs, while Brandon Fryou was 2-for-3 with a double.
Nick Mayon earned the win. In 5.2 innings, he surrendered four runs — all unearned — on six hits with three walks and eight strikeouts.
Berwick (15-15, 9-3) will return to action today at 5 p.m. when it hosts Jennings in Class 3A first-round playoff action. Berwick is the No. 14 seed, while Jennings is the No. 19 seed.
Morgan City drops two games
The Morgan City Tigers dropped their final two games of the regular season on the road, falling to Assumption, 8-5, Thursday and Lutcher, 6-5, Saturday.
In Thursday’s contest, Morgan City outhit Assumption, 11-6, but committed six errors. Of Assumption’s eight runs, just two were earned.
Assumption never trailed, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
While Morgan City tied the score at one in the second, Assumption scored three runs in the bottom of the second, one in the third and one in the fourth for a 6-1 lead.
Each team scored two runs in the fifth, and Morgan City scored two runs in the sixth.
Gage Hirschmann suffered the loss for Morgan City. In 4.1 innings, he surrendered eight runs — two earned — on six hits with four walks and two strikeouts.
Offensively, Joseph Doiron led Morgan City with a 3-for-3 performance with two doubles, an RBI and two runs. Other top offensive contributors included Caleb Landry, 2-for-3, two RBIs and a run; Colden Comeaux, 1-for-3, an RBI; and Malik Phillips, 1-for-4, an RBI.
On Saturday, Lutcher plated a run in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 6-5 victory against Morgan City.
The game was similar to the first time this season when the teams met and Morgan City scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to beat the Bulldogs, 4-3.
In Saturday’s game, Morgan City took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third before Lutcher plated four runs in the bottom of the frame for a 4-1 advantage.
Morgan City tied the game at 4 in the top of the fifth, but Lutcher took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the sixth.
Morgan City again tied the score at 5 in the top of the seventh before Lutcher scored the winning run in the bottom of the frame.
Hutchinson suffered the loss in relief. In four innings, he surrendered two earned runs on four hits with three walks and two hit batters.
Charles started the game for Morgan City. In 2.2 innings, he surrendered four runs — two earned — on two hits with four walks, one hit batter and three strikeouts.
Charles led Morgan City with a 2-for-3 performance with two RBIs. Other top contributors included Philip Hutchinson, 2-for-4; and Phillips, 1-for-3, and an RBI.
Morgan City (13-15 overall, 6-5 in district) will return to action Tuesday when it opens Class 4A postseason play with a trip to Crowley. Morgan City is the No. 22 seed, while Crowley is the No. 11 seed. First pitch at Miller Stadium is set for 6 p.m.
