CCHS defeats Vermilion Catholic, 5-1

Central Catholic remained perfect in District 7-1A play with a 5-1 victory against Vermilion Catholic in a battle of top 10 teams in Class 1A.
Central Catholic, ranked No. 1 in Class 1A according to the latest Louisiana High School Athletic Association Class 1A power rankings, scored two runs each in the second and fourth innings and another in the sixth.
Vermilion Catholic, ranked No. 9, scored its lone run in the top of the seventh.
Greg Leger earned the win for Central Catholic. In a complete-game effort, Leger surrendered just one earned run on three hits with four walks and fanned five.
“Gregory Leger pitched really well,” Central Catholic coach Tyler Jensen said. “He allowed his defense to work for him and make some plays. We got a few clutch hits and made some timely plays on defense.”
He said he hoped his team could continue to build on the win and play better today when they travel to Abbeville to face Vermilion Catholic in the second game between the two schools in district play today at 6 p.m.
The game also was a battle of the top two teams in the district standings as Central Catholic took a two game lead in the league race. The Eagles improved to 7-0 overall, while Vermilion Catholic slipped to 5-2.
While Central Catholic (17-3) scored enough runs to win the game, they did strand 12 runners on base, including the bases loaded in the first and second innings. In the second inning, they plated two runs.
Offensively, Drake Angeron led Central Catholic with a 3-for-4 performance with an RBI and a run. Other top contributors included Samuel Guarisco, 2-for-3, a double, an RBI, a stolen base and a run; Stefano Guarisco, 1-for-2, an RBI, three stolen bases and a run; Mitchell Lemoine, 1-for-2, an RBI; and Thomas Garber, an RBI.
Patterson falls
to E.D. White
The Patterson Lumberjacks fell at E.D. White, 7-0, in District 8-3A play Wednesday.
E.D. White, ranked No. 2 in the latest Louisiana High School Athletic Association Class 3A power rankings, scored five runs in the bottom of the first and added two in the sixth.
Brennan Gouaux suffered the loss for Patterson. In six innings, he surrendered seven runs — six earned — on five hits with four walks, one hit batter and fanned two.
Offensively, Bryce Beaubouef led Patterson (9-11 overall, 1-4 in district) with a 2-for-3 performance.
Patterson’s next game, a home matchup with E.D. White, has been moved to Saturday. First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m.
