CCHS Eagles knock off undefeated Brusly, 5-3

Central Catholic avenged an earlier season loss to Brusly with a 5-3 win against the previously unbeaten Panthers on the first day of the Ascension Catholic tournament in Donaldsonville.
Central Catholic (7-1) handed the Panthers their first loss after a 16-0 start to the season.
Blake Hidalgo earned the win for the Eagles with a complete-game effort. In seven innings, he surrendered three runs — one earned — on eight hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
Brusly took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first and extended it to 2-0 in the top of the fourth.
While Central Catholic tied the score at 2 in the bottom of the fourth, the Panthers responded with a run in the top of the fifth.
Central Catholic plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth for the eventual final.
Brusly outhit Central Catholic 8-5 in the win.
Mitchell Lemoine led Central Catholic with a 1-for-2 performance with an RBI and a run. Other top contributors included Thomas Garber, 1-for-3, an RBI; and Patrick Barron, an RBI.
Central Catholic will return to action in the tournament Friday when it faces Ascension Catholic in a 6:30 p.m. contest. On Saturday, Central Catholic will meet Dunham in a 12:30 p.m. contest.
Friday’s game will be a rematch of the Class 1A quarterfinals a year ago, which Central Catholic won 2-1 in 10 innings.
MCHS edges New Iberia
Morgan City edged New Iberia, 2-1, in first-day action at New Iberia’s tournament, Wednesday.
While the game originally was set for today, it was moved up to Wednesday due to the threat of inclement weather this weekend, Morgan City coach Barret Rey said today.
In Wednesday’s win, Morquisse Charles earned the win as he surrendered just two hits in six innings of work. He gave up one earned run with five walks and fanned seven.
Morgan City plated a run each in the second and third innings, while New Iberia pushed across a run in the fifth.
The teams combined for just six hits (Morgan City, four, New Iberia, two), while New Iberia committed four errors.
Joshua Lorenzo led Morgan City with a 1-for-2 performance with a run and a stolen base, while Charles had an RBI.
Morgan City (5-8) will return to action Saturday in the tournament when it faces Catholic High-New Iberia at 3 p.m.
