No. 4 Central Catholic will open postseason playoff action today when it hosts No. 29 seed Logansport in Class 1A softball action at 4 p.m. in Bayou Vista.
The Lady Eagles, who finished the regular season with a 21-3 mark, including an 11-1 mark in District 7-1A action, was named co-champs.
Coach Joe Russo said he was pleased with how this season has gone.
“We lost three seniors last year,” Russo said. “They were some big shoes to fill, and I definitely think we had some kids step up and take those positions and have done a good job in those positions. … I thought my team played hard.”
Russo said his team has played to their capabilities at this point.
On the mound, the Lady Eagles have been led by senior standout Megan Landry, who will be signing with Nicholls Thursday.
“Megan’s had an outstanding year,” Russo said.
He said Landry and catcher Paige Thomas have formed a duo while the team is hitting the ball well.
“We just got to continue to work hard and maybe look at some of the weaknesses we have and just try to work hard on those areas,” Russo said.
As for his team’s first-round opponent, Russo said he doesn’t know any more than what he has found through internet research on Logansport.
“Due to the area and teams that they play, I don’t really have any contacts in that area,” Russo said.
He said Logansport (7-13) is scoring about five runs per game and surrendered eight per contest.
Logansport snapped a six-game losing streak with a 14-2 win against Singer in its regular season finale.
Logansport finished 3-7 in District 3-1A.
With nearly the last week of the regular season being washed out to due rain, the Lady Eagles have spent a lot of times at various locations working on mainly hitting.
However, he said they have been practicing daily.
“We’re just again taking the opportunity that we get to keep the ball in our hand and our glove and swinging a bat, and that’s what we’ve been doing up to this point,” he said.
