CCHS qualifies two for state

Central Catholic qualified three competitors for state competition during the Class 1A Region II meet at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Tuesday.
Central Catholic’s Cade Minton advanced to state after winning the 3,200-meter run and finishing second in the 1,600-meter run.
While Minton was scheduled to run in the 800-meter run, too, Central Catholic coach David Fuhrer said he was scratched from the event to give him a better shot in the 3,200-meter run.
Central Catholic coach David Fuhrer said he was proud of Minton for “carrying on the tradition” that former Central Catholic standout Sal Grizzaffi established for distance running at the school.
Also, Central Catholic’s Samarick Paul qualified for state in the 100-meter dash after finishing second at regionals with a time of 11.17.
Paul came back from a knee injury suffered in August during football season for a state-qualifying performance.
“He recovered enough, and he’s worked hard to make it to state,” he said.
A year ago, Paul won the long jump at state but didn’t compete in the event this year.
While the Eagles 4x100-meter relay of Chris Singleton, Jalen Johnson, Sydney Holder and Samarick Paul originally won the event with a season-best of 43.95, the team was disqualified for lane violation on the third exchange.
Fuhrer said it appeared the Eagles did not commit any violations on the exchange, although he said it was close.
“Doesn’t take away the fact that the kids ran their best race of the year and came out and competed, and I’m very proud of them for that,” Fuhrer said. “I’m just sad that it came down to a judgment call.”
As a team, Central Catholic’s boys team finished sixth with 29 points, while its girls team finished 17th with six points.
Lafayette Christian swept the team titles with 84 points in girls scoring and 100 points in boys scoring.
The top three finishers in each event advance to the state meet, which will be held for classes 1A and 2A on May 6 at Bernie Moore Track Stadium in Baton Rouge.
