Central Catholic High School will travel to Gueydan Friday for a District 7-1A contest against the Bears.
With a win this week, the Eagles could potentially set up a Week 10 showdown with Ascension Episcopal for a share of the district title.
“Without a win this week, next week’s game is kind of tainted, so we want a shot at a share of the district championship,” Central Catholic coach Tommy Minton said. “We can’t win it outright, but if we win this week and next week, we get a share of it. That’s better than nothing.”
Central Catholic enters this week’s contest 7-1 overall and 4-1 in District 7-1A. A week ago, the Eagles defeated Hanson Memorial 52-22.
While Central Catholic led 24-6 at halftime a week ago, Hanson closed the gap to just 30-22 with 5:45 remaining.
However, the Eagles got a touchdown run by Stefano Guarisco on their next possession, and Jalen Johnson returned an interception 49 yards for a touchdown on Hanson’s ensuing drive.
The Eagles scored another touchdown, while its defense kept Hanson out of the end zone for the remainder of the game.
Guarisco led the Eagles with 25 carries for 285 yards and six touchdowns in the win.
He has 213 carries for 1,915 yards and 29 touchdowns this season. His rushing yardage ranks third in all classes, while his scoring total of 260 points (35 total touchdowns, 25 two-point conversions) ranks first statewide.
Guarisco also has caught 11 passes for 266 yards and four scores.
Quarterback Blake Byrne has completed 37-of-66 passes for 752 yards with nine touchdowns and eight interceptions this season.
Greg Leger leads receivers with 10 catches for 329 yards and three touchdowns.
In last week’s win, Central Catholic totaled 417 yards of offense (374 rushing, 43 passing), while its defense surrendered 230 yards (189 rushing, 41 passing).
Gueydan (2-6, 1-4), who snapped a 23-game losing streak at the beginning of the season with a 36-20 victory against Ascension Christian, has lost its last four games, most recently a 53-14 defeat to Vermilion Catholic last week.
The Bears were outgained 393 to 43 in total offense with -11 yards rushing and 54 more through the air.
“We’re going to see a wing-t offense, which we’ve seen plenty of times this year already, and they (are) going to mix a four- and five-man front on defense,” Minton said.
He said he expects to see a lot more five-man front because of how much Central Catholic runs the ball.
With a trip just over an hour and 30 minutes awaiting them, Minton said the trip is a good tune-up for the postseason.
“It’s a district game, and it’s a road trip. One of the things we talked about is somewhere along the line in the playoffs, you got to take a nice, long road trip,” he said. “This is good preparation for that; getting off the bus focused to play.”
Friday’s game will kick off at 7 p.m.
