Morgan City High School made it close early but Central of Baton Rouge pulled away for an easy 57-27 victory in non-district action Friday in Central.
While the Tigers gave up a touchdown to Central on its first possession for an early 8-0 deficit, Morgan City responded on defense later in the first quarter when Tierell Jones recorded an interception, returning it for a touchdown. Irving Delgado’s extra point cut the margin to 8-7.
However, Central’s Justin Vessell took the ensuing kickoff back 79 yards for a touchdown and Central scored touchdowns on its next three possessions to balloon its lead to 36-7 in the second quarter en route to the easy victory.
“We obviously were outmanned, but they never gave up,” first-year Morgan City coach Scott Tregle told The Advocate of his team. “(Central head coach) Even Sid Edwards said, that was a much better team than he faced last year.”
A year ago, Morgan City fell to the Wildcats, 51-7 in Central.
After Vessell’s kickoff return, Central scored touchdowns on Leo Brownfield’s 2-yard run, Daelon Richardson’s 32-yard pass from Tyler Sansone and University of Miami commitment Terrell Chatman’s 30-yard reception from Sansone.
Sansone completed 9-of-12 passes for 153 yards and two scores. He also threw two interceptions.
Morgan City responded following Central’s last touchdown of the half when punter Jaylen Jones had a snap on a punt attempt go through his legs before retrieving it at the 3-yard line and working his way through the Wildcats special teams’ unit for a 97 yard touchdown to cut the deficit to 34-13.
Jones had five carries for 87 yards and a touchdown for the Tigers on the ground, while he also caught two passes for 30 yards.
Central had the second half’s first score as Shane Smith recovered a fumble by Jaylen Jones in the Tigers’ end zone for a touchdown and Brownfield scored from four yards out to increase Central’s lead to 50-14 in the third quarter.
Jones got Morgan City on the scoreboard when he returned the ensuing kickoff for an 80-yard touchdown, but Central responded with a six-play, 66-yard drive that concluded with Gabe Brown’s 24-yard run.
Morgan City closed the scoring late in the fourth quarter when Kevon Marsh busted a 65-yard run for a score.
Marsh led the Tigers ground attack with 11 carries for 99 yards and a touchdown. He also caught a pass for four yards.
Morgan City quarterback Hector Tolento completed 3 of 9 passes for 33 yards for the Tigers.
While Morgan City totaled 243 yards, including 210 on the ground, the Tigers had just six first downs.
Central had 20 first downs and 410 total yards. The Wildcats had 194 rushing and 216 passing.
A running clock was utilized in much of Friday’s second half.
Morgan City (0-2) will return to action Friday when it hosts West St. Mary.
Central (2-0) will travel to face Jesuit.
