Turnovers and penalties doomed the Berwick Panthers as they dropped a 14-13 contest to Delcambre in both teams’ season opener Friday.
Berwick fumbled the ball away on it first two offensive drives, which Delcambre converted into touchdowns for a quick 14-0 lead.
While Berwick climbed its way back into the contest, cutting the deficit to 14-13 late in the second quarter, neither team could muster any more scoring for the remainder of the contest.
In addition to its two early fumbles, Berwick also was penalized nine times for 80 yards for the game, while Delcambre had two penalties for 19 yards.
Berwick coach Craig Brodie said penalties hurt them on offense when they were moving the ball.
“It had to be five to one penalties against us, and it’s unfortunate, but it’s part of the game we got to get better at,” he said. “We can’t turn the ball over.”
While Berwick had good field position to begin the game at its own 42 yard line, quarterback Jeremy Boudreaux couldn’t handle the Panther’s first snap on offense as the ball rolled forward and was recovered by Delcambre.
Delcambre moved the ball down with little resistance to its first score of the game on a Bubba Latiolais 11-yard run.
Delcambre was aided on the drive by a 15-yard facemask penalty that pushed the ball from the Berwick 30 to the Panthers’ 15.
Berwick gained one first down on its next possession on an 11-yard pass from Boudreaux to Audwin Williams. However, Boudreaux was sacked on second down by Delcambre’s Reese LeBlanc before Draylan West fumbled on third down, and Delcambre recovered at the Berwick 29.
Delcambre again turned to its ground game as Latiolais scored on a 3-yard run with 5:33 remaining. Zachary Trahan, who was 2-for-2 on extra points, converted the PAT for a 14-0 Delcambre lead.
Berwick put together its first scoring drive in the second quarter after Berwick recovered a fumble by Trahan at the Delcambre 39-yard line.
Boudreaux and Marquis Rogers led the Berwick ground game as the Panthers moved down the field to the Delcambre 9-yard line and a personal foul penalty gave them the ball at the Delcambre 5.
However, after Rogers lost six yards on first down following a fumble and Boudreaux lost another on second down, Berwick faced a third-and-goal situation from the Berwick 12.
Boudreaux ended the drive on third down when he connected on his fifth consecutive pass to Williams for a 12-yard touchdown run.
Shannon Theriot’s extra point cut the Berwick deficit to 14-7 with 7:16 remaining in the half.
Boudreaux finished the contest, completing 7-of-12 passes for 71 yards and a touchdown.
Williams led the Panthers’ receivers with four receptions for 42 yards.
After forcing another Delcambre punt after three plays, Berwick again went to work on its second scoring drive.
Rogers had a 35-yard run to begin the drive. While originally it was thought he was tackled near the goal line, he was ruled out of bounds at the Delcambre 20.
From there, Berwick continued to move the ball with passes of 12 yards to Williams and six yards to Kenan Jones for a first and goal at the Delcambre 7.
One play later, West scored on a 7-yard run with 2:26 remaining.
Theriot’s extra point was no good for what ended up being the 14-13 final.
While Berwick kept the Delcambre offense out the end zone in the second half, the home team dominated on offense in the second half as Berwick had the ball just twice.
While Delcambre drove down the field to its goal line to begin the second half, the Panthers couldn’t punch the ball in the end zone thanks to a key play by Berwick’s Ronald Barrow.
While waiting for the referee’s signal at the goal line whether Delcambre’s quarterback had scored or not on fourth down, all of a sudden Barrow came out from the pile with the football and began to run down the Berwick sideline towards the opposite end zone.
No whistles were blown to stop his return, and he rumbled 55 yards before finally being taken down.
However, Berwick could do nothing with the possession as it was stopped on fourth down at the Delcambre 36.
Later in the fourth quarter, another Berwick drive was halted after two holding penalties pushed Berwick back.
Berwick totaled 157 yards of offense (86 rushing and 71 passing).
Rogers led the Panthers with 33 yards rushing.
Berwick will return to action Friday when it hosts Highland Baptist, while Delcambre will travel to meet Lake Arthur.
