Donaldsonville High celebrated homecoming with a 32-0 victory against the Berwick Panthers Friday night.
Despite the score, the Panthers had good field position on several drives in the ball game. The problem for the Panthers was they either couldn’t get anything started on drives or finish them.
Berwick also lost standout running back Braden Billiot early to injury.
Brodie said the Panthers’ offense was hurt when Billiot went out.
“(In the) first half, we just could not keep the ball,” he said.
Berwick finished the game with 104 yards of total offense (42 rushing and 62 passing).
Meanwhile, the Tigers rolled up 432 yards of offense (259 rushing and 432 passing).
Brodie said his team was “outmatched” by Donaldsonville, noting their wide receivers had a tremendous height advantage over Berwick’s defensive backs.
“Our kids played their hearts out,” Brodie said. “They ran to the ball. … I thought we gave great effort.”
Donaldsonville needed little time to score on its first drive as the Tigers moved 64 yards in four plays, capped by a two-yard run by quarterback Tyler Brown. Stephen Sullivan’s extra point was no good for a 6-0 lead with 10:57 remaining in the opening quarter.
The quick scoring drive’s big play was a 58-yard completion from Brown to Jaquel Gant on a play where Brown escaped a Berwick defender on one side of the field before moving to the opposite side where he found Gant down the Donaldsonville sideline on a pass that Gant turned into a 58-yard completion.
While Berwick got a 15-yard run by Billiot on its first offensive play of the game, moving the ball up to the Donaldsonville 50, the Panthers got no more on the drive and were forced to punt.
Donaldsonville (4-4 overall, 1-2 district) went back to work on its second possession with a drive that started at its own 33-yard line and ended with a 3-yard run by Koby Bozeman with 5:18 remaining in the first quarter for a 12-0 Donaldsonville lead.
In the second quarter, Berwick got the ball at the 50-yard line after Brown couldn’t complete a fourth down pass to a receiver.
However, the Panthers could get nothing going again and were forced to punt.
Donaldsonville responded on its ensuing possession with another touchdown, this time on a 25-yard run by Gant for an 18-0 Donaldsonville lead with 8:34 remaining in the half.
On its final drive of the first half, Berwick moved the furthest it had all game into Donaldsonville territory, taking the ball from the 50 and moving it all the way down to the Donaldsonville 11 on the strength of two runs by quarterback Jeremy Boudreaux and a pass interference penalty against Donaldsonville.
However, a chop block penalty as well as three consecutive sacks of Boudreaux, the last with little time remaining in the quarter, allowed the Tigers to escape the half with the shutout.
Berwick got the ball to begin the third quarter and again moved into Donaldsonville territory all the way down to the Donaldsonville 19.
However, on fourth down, the Panthers could not get a 36-yard field goal attempt by Rogelio Rodriguez off after a bad snap.
Donaldsonville followed with two touchdowns, a 1-yard run by Brown at the 3:14 mark and a 73-yard run by Gant with 21 seconds remaining in the third quarter for the final.
“We got inside the red zone two or three times in the second half and just couldn’t finish drives,” Brodie said. “We had some questionable noncalls and an inadvertent whistle and some other things that killed our drives.”
Berwick was led offensively on the ground by Boudreaux, who rushed 23 times for 28 yards.
Boudreaux also completed 5 of 12 passes for 62 yards.
Audwin Williams led the Panthers’ receivers with four catches for 64 yards.
Berwick (2-6, 1-1) will return to action Friday when it hosts Patterson.
