Duo leads Brother Martin past Patterson Lumberjacks
The Brother Martin Crusaders’ duo of Jared West and Bruce Jordan-Swilling were too much for the Patterson Lumberjacks in the Crusaders’ 49-28 win at Patterson High Friday.
West and Jordan-Swilling combined for 424 of Brother Martin’s 437 rushing yards and five of its six rushing touchdowns in the dominant win for the Class 5A school against the Class 3A Lumberjacks.
West rushed 32 times for 264 yards and three scores, while Jordan-Swilling had 17 carries for 160 yards and two scores.
The Crusaders weren’t one-dimensional, either, as quarterback Jake Broggi completed 9-of-14 passes for 153 yards and a score while also throwing two interceptions.
Brother Martin totaled 590 yards and 30 first downs.
The Crusaders didn’t take long to get on the scoreboard, taking its opening possession for a score that was nearly all on the ground. West carried seven times before Jordan-Swilling finished off the drive with consecutive carries, the last a 12-yard touchdown run.
Brother Martin would add touchdowns on a West 39-yard run, a Jordan-Swilling 24-yard scamper and a 35-yard pass from Broggi to Jeremy Singleton for a 28-0 lead with 3:51 remaining in the second quarter.
Singleton led the Crusaders’ receivers with five catches for 100 yards.
Facing a hefty deficit, Patterson followed Brother Martin’s score with its most successful drive so far in the game.
After Nehemiah Augustus, who had a solid day returning kickoffs for the Lumberjacks, returned the kickoff nearly 40 yards, Patterson began play on its own 42 yard line.
Tristen Ausama converted a 4- and- 6 situation for the Lumberjacks with a 9-yard run. A facemask penalty on the play moved the ball to the Brother Martin 30, while a pass interference penalty on the next play gave the Lumberjacks a first down at the Brother Martin 20.
Ausama ran for five yards on first down and caught a six-yard pass from quarterback Sirbatian Charles on second down, Brother Martin was penalized on the second play for unsportsmanlike conduct, moving the ball down to the Brother Martin 3 yard line.
Following two incomplete passes, Ausama scored on third down with 1:40 remaining in the half. Patterson kicker Christian Soria, who was 4-for-4 on point-after attempts, connected on his first of the night to cut Brother Martin’s advantage to 28-7.
Ausama led the Lumberjacks’ ground attack with 15 carries for 88 yards and a touchdown. He also caught three passes for 37 yards.
Patterson stopped Brother Martin on its final drive of the first half when Daylon Charlot tipped Broggi’s pass before snaring it at the Patterson 5 yard line for an interception.
While Patterson’s first drive of the second half was stalled after three plays, Brother Martin continued to move the ball with ease as it embarked on an eight-play, 74-yard drive that ended with West’s 1-yard run at the 7:16 mark. Kicker Glynn Morere, who was 7-for-7 on point-after attempts, connected on the extra point for a 35-7 advantage.
Patterson responded quickly when Augustus fielded the ensuing kickoff and returned it 97 yards for a touchdown with 7 minutes remaining in the quarter for a 35-14 Brother Martin lead.
However, Brother Martin responded on its next possession when William Fulham capped a drive with a 6-yard touchdown run.
Both teams exchanged touchdowns on its next two drives as Charles scored for Patterson on its next possession on a 26-yard run with 1:41 remaining in the third quarter. On the play, Charles dove into the end zone for the score.
Brother Martin responded with a 5-yard run by West on the first play of the fourth quarter for a 49-21 advantage.
Patterson tacked on another touchdown at the 6:26 mark of the fourth quarter when Charles hit Daylon Charlot for a 48-yard touchdown pass.
Charles completed 8-of-20 passes for 134 yards and a touchdown, while he also rushed eight times for 62 yards and another score.
Charlot led the Lumberjack receivers with two catches for 95 yards and a touchdown.
