Eagles knock off Tigers 8-4

Staff Report

Central Catholic knocked off Morgan City 8-4 in baseball action in Morgan City Tuesday.
While Central Catholic jumped out to as much as an 8-1 lead after the fifth inning, Morgan City plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and one in the bottom of the seventh for the final margin.
“It’s always nice getting a win against an in-town rival,” Central Catholic coach Tyler Jensen said. “I thought for five innings or so we were in complete control. The last two innings we got too comfortable and allowed them to get back in the game. Give credit to Morgan City for not quitting and making things interesting. I was pleased with how we handled the adversity of having guys out due to injury. It goes along with our ‘next-guy-up’ attitude. I’m looking forward to putting this game behind us and preparing for this weekend.”
Central Catholic’s Blake Hidalgo earned the win in relief. In 1.1 innings, he surrendered one walk and fanned two.
He was one of four Central Catholic pitchers used in the contest.
Gregory Leger started for Central Catholic and in two innings, he was perfect on the mound with three strikeouts.
Patrick Barron tossed 1.2 innings and surrendered one run on one hit with three walks and one strikeout, while Samuel Guarisco closed the game. In two innings, he surrendered three runs — two earned — on three hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
Leger led Central Catholic with a 3-for-4 performance with a double and four RBIs, while Guarisco finished 3-for-3 with an RBI and three runs.
Other top offensive contributors for Central Catholic included Mitchell Lemoine, 2-for-4, three RBIs; Thomas Garber, 2-for-4, a double; Tony Pennison, 1-for-3, a double and two runs; and Matthew Barbier, 1-for-4, a double and three runs.
Rhett Fryou suffered the loss for Morgan City. In 3.2 innings, he surrendered seven runs — six earned — on eight hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
“Central Catholic hit the ball well, and we didn’t,” Morgan City coach Tim Vidos said. “Couple of mistakes in (the) early part of the game helped to give Central a big lead. Rhett did not have it last night, and they took advantage of it. Evan (Stadalis) and Philip (Hutchinson) came in and shut them down and gave us the chance for a late charge. We came up short, but we went down fighting so I’m proud of them for that.”
In 2.1 innings of relief, Stadalis surrendered one earned run on four hits with two strikeouts, while in one inning of relief, Hutchinson only surrendered two walks.
Offensively, Josh Lorenzo led Morgan City with a 2-for-3 performance with a run, while Stadalis was 2-for-4. Other top contributors included Fryou, Abram Hartley and Hutchinson, who all had one RBI.
Both teams left a large number of players on base as the Eagles stranded nine and the Tigers, 11.
Morgan City left the bases loaded in the fourth and seventh innings and left runners on second and third in the sixth inning.
Morgan City (2-3) will return to action Thursday when it opens play in Berwick’s Panther Classic. Morgan City and Berwick will meet in Thursday’s final game at 8 p.m.
