East Ascension pounds Patterson, 42-27

We made some careless mistakes tonight and it put us under the gun early, but we did a good job of fighting to come back.

Patterson dug itself a big hole for the second week in a row en route to a 42-27 loss to East Ascension Friday.
Patterson (0-2) also fell behind another Class 5A foe, Brother Martin, early in its Week 1 loss.
“Our kids competed and we knew they would,” Patterson head coach Chad Blanchard said after Friday’s game. “They know we play a tough pre-district schedule. We try to schedule some teams that we know are going to be good, and in the long run, it’s only going to make us better.”
Patterson also started last season with losses to Brother Martin and East Ascension before making a run deep into the Class 3A playoffs.
East Ascension (1-1) used big plays to grab a 21-0 second quarter lead. Spartans’ quarterback Kyran Irvin threw for two scores and ran for another to put Patterson on the ropes.
East Ascension running back standout Joshua Walker had more than 200 all-purpose yards and three scores, including a 52-yard catch, a 92-yard kickoff return and 39-yard run.
“We made some careless mistakes tonight and it put us under the gun early, but we did a good job of fighting to come back,” Blanchard said. “We have some things to straighten out, and we need for some guys to step up for us.”
East Ascension still had a three-score lead with 8:50 left in the first half before Patterson standout receiver and Alabama commitment Daylon Charlot caught fire.
Lumberjacks’ quarterback Sirbatian Charles found Charlot for a 27-yard score with 5:19 remaining in the half. The drive, eight plays and 65-yards, gave Patterson some much needed momentum.
The ’Jacks’ defense responded by stripping Irvin of the football.
Charles went right back to Charlot, who raced past everyone, catching a bomb over his shoulder and racing 71-yards for the score. Christian Soria’s extra-point kick got Patterson back into the game, trailing 21-14 with 2:51 left in the half.
Charlot had four catches for 139 yards and two touchdowns. The senior has six catches for 234 yards and three scores in two games.
Charles was 11-of-28 passing for 210 yards and three touchdowns Friday. The junior has completed 19-of-48 passes for 344 yards and four touchdowns in two games.
Despite Patterson’s first-half rally Friday, Walker’s heroics took the wind out of Patterson’s sail, darting 92-yards for a touchdown with ensuing kickoff following Charlot’s second score. East Ascension led 28-14 at the half.
“We had a couple blown assignments and gave up that big kickoff return, and that shouldn’t happen,” Blanchard said. “I don’t care who we’re playing.”
The teams traded touchdowns in the third quarter.
The Spartans got a short scoring run from Joshua Bates, and the ’Jacks closed out the quarter with 10-yard circus catch by Shay Ragas. East Ascension took a 35-21 lead into the fourth quarter.
East Ascension capped its scoring with Walker’s 39-yard touchdown run with 7:37 to play.
The Spartans have outscored the ’Jacks 108 to 59 in two games.

East Ascension only punted once Friday.
“We had a good week of practice, and we played much better tonight after losing a tough one last week,” East Ascension head coach Paul Bourgeois said. “We thought we were better than we are, but they’re back down to Earth now.”
East Ascension travels to St Charles Catholic (2-0) Friday, while Patterson visits Catholic-High New Iberia (2-0).
