Former prep track athletes in action

As a men’s and women’s group, I felt this was the best collective meet we’ve had in several seasons.

Former Tri-City area prep athletes were in action last weekend at track meets in Louisiana and Alabama.
Southeastern Louisiana University’s Nia Stewart, a Central Catholic alum, earned a first-place finish in the 55-meter dash and won the long jump at the McNeese Cowboy Indoor I in Lake Charles.
Her two first-place finishes were among 10 earned by the men’s and women’s squads during the event
“As a men’s and women’s group, I felt this was the best collective meet we’ve had in several seasons,” Head Coach Sean Brady said in a university release.
Stewart’s time of 7.12 in the 55-meter run tied her school record she set in 2012.
She leaped 19-6 in the long jump.
Also competing for Southeastern this past weekend was Central Catholic alum Kendall Robinson, who placed 11th in the men’s long jump with a leap of 20-9.75.
In Birmingham, Morgan City High School alum Vernon Norwood was part of the LSU Tigers’ 4x400 meter relay, which set a meet record at the Auburn Indoor Invitational at the Birmingham Crossplex.
Norwood, who ran along with Darrell Bush, Quincy Downing and Cyril Grayson, finished with a time of 3:09.17. Middle Tennessee State was second place at 3:10.55.
The Tigers will return to action Jan. 25 at the Texas A&M Triangular at Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium, while Southeastern track and field teams will travel this weekend to Jonesboro, Ark., to compete in the Arkansas State University Invitational.
