Hanson Lady Tigers top Grand Lake
Sarah Sonnier hurled the Hanson Memorial Lady Tigers to a 13-4 victory over the Grand Lake Lady Hornets Monday at the HMS Softball Complex in the State Class A bidistrict playoffs.
Hanson Memorial Coach Brittany Broussard was extremely pleased with the win.
“They played an excellent game on defense and offense,” she said. “Our bats were rolling and our defense held them to singles.”
Hanson struck early and often in opening the state playoffs in grand style.
The Lady Tigers went up 2-0 in the first frame before building a 6-0 advantage after striking for four more runs at the end of three complete innings.
Grand Lake managed to score three runs in the top half of the fourth frame, slicing Hanson’s lead to 6-3. The Lady Tigers stretched their lead to 9-3 with three runs in the bottom half of the fourth frame. The Hanson Lady Tigers struck for four insurance runs over the final two frames to post a 13-4 victory over Grand Lake in the opening round of the state playoffs.
Sonnier was brilliant in the circle, tossing a complete game, facing 34 batters, allowing four runs on 10 hits with six strikeouts and four walks. Grand Lake’s Coryn Vincent was the losing pitcher after she worked six innings, giving up 12 runs on 10 hits with seven walks.
Sonnier _ who notched the mound victory _ helped her own cause by going 3 for 3 at the plate with a double and one walk.
Other top hitters for the Hanson Memorial Lady Tigers included: Paige Diamond went 3 for 3, double; Noel Baker, 3 for 4, 2 doubles, 6 RBI; Mackenzie Hebert, 2 for 3, run; Lunden Verdin, 2 for 3, double, walk, 2 RBI; Kaylee Broussard, 1 for 3, double, walk, RBI; Charlotte Pillaro, run; Alyssa Young, 2 for 4, run and Casey Fitzgerald, 4 runs (courtesy runner for Sarah Sonnier).
Sheridan Smith led the Lady Hornets at the plate with a 3-run homer in a 1 for 3 outing. Other top hitters for Grand Lake were: Marlee Boudreaux, 3 for 4, double; Hollie Boudreaux, 1 for 2; Allison Ross, 1 for 4, double, 2 runs; Alanah Theriot, 2 for 4, RBI, run and Laney Hampton, 1 for 3.
Hanson will advance in the state playoffs by playing the survivor of the Quachita Christian-County Day contest which is being played today. The Lady Tigers will probably play their next game on Friday, depending on the winner of the bidistrict game.
