HMS Tigers hold off Eagles

Cameron Stovall supplied the power while starting pitcher John Guienze and reliever Brennan Young turned in a clutch performances as the Hanson Memorial Tigers pulled out a 7-4 District 7-A victory over the Vermilion Catholic Eagles Thursday here at the Amar Lancon Field.
Stovall, who went 3 for 4 with four runs-batted-in, blasted a home-run to power the Tigers to their current 8-4 District 7-A record.
Guienze _ who in an earlier contest tossed a no-hitter _ got the mound victory for the Tigers, yielding four runs on five hits with two strikeouts and three walks over 4.33 innings. Young earned the save after working 2.67 frames in relief, surrendering one run on one hit with two strikeouts and three walks.
Vermilion Catholic struck for two runs in the top half of the second inning before the Hanson Memorial Tigers answered with four runs in the bottom half of the second frame for a 4-2 advantage. Vermilion Catholic added one run in the third, pulling closer to the Tigers at 4-3. HMS padded its lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning for a 5-3 cushion before VCHS scored one run in the top of the fifth to trail HMS by a 5-4 margin. Hanson added two insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth and sixth frames, building a 7-4 advantage. In their final at bat, VCHS managed to score one run before bowing to the HMS Tigers by a final score of 7-5.

HMS improved to 13-14 overall and 8-4 in league play with the win.
