HMS wins district opener

BROUSSARD _ Winning pitcher Brennan Young and relievers John Guienze and Josh Sanchez hurled the Hanson Memorial Tigers to a District 7-1A opening 17-11 victory over the Ascension Episcopal Blue Gators here Tuesday at the AES High School Field.
Young, who picked up the mound victory, started on the hill and worked three complete innings, allowing five runs on seven hits with one walk. Guienze hurled 2.67 frames, surrendering six runs (3 earned) on six hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Josh Sanchez tossed the final 1.33 frames, not allowing a run nor a hit with one strikeout. AES also used three pitchers on the day with Rowe Stipe taking the loss .
HMS (10-1, 1-0) built up a 6-2 advantage over the first two frames. HMS exploded for five more runs in the third inning, gaining an 11-5 cushion. The Tigers struck for six insurance runs over the fourth and fifth frames on the way to the win.
