'Jacks fall to North Webster, 6-3

Staff Report

The Patterson High School 2016 baseball season came to an end Monday night in north Louisiana as the Lumberjacks fell to North Webster, 6-3, in Class 3A Bi-District round playoff action.
The game was scoreless until North Webster scored five runs in the bottom of the third and another in the bottom of the fourth for a 6-0 lead.
“It was a good baseball game,” Patterson coach Ryan Jensen said. “We just had (one) inning where there were a couple plays we didn’t make, and they got a few hits that really caused our mistakes to hurt. I was proud of the way our guys played through it and gave ourselves a chance in the end.”
In the bottom of the third, North Webster’s nine-hole hitter, Kade Garmany, reached on a fielder’s choice and later scored on a passed ball for a 1-0 North Webster lead.
Blake Atchley followed Garmany with a walk, and Riley Orr connected on an infield single to load the bases.
The next batter, Logan Vidrine, reached on an error by Patterson third baseman Bryce Beaubouef, allowing two runs to score for a 3-0 North Webster advantage.
Connor McClure drove in two more runs via a two-RBI double to left field for a 5-0 lead in the third inning.
North Webster added its sixth run in the bottom of the fourth after Patrick Modisette, who led off the inning with a single to left field, advanced to second base on a sacrifice and to third base on a hit before scoring on another sacrifice.
While Patterson loaded the bases in the top of the second with two outs via Jamey Fabre and Brennan Gouaux’s back-to-back singles and a Beaubouef walk, Patterson’s Blake Dreyer struck out swinging to end the threat.
Patterson scored two runs in the top of the fifth when Gouaux reached on an error by North Webster second baseman Hayden Corbell and scored on a triple to right field by Beaubouef.
Dreyer followed with a single to left field, scoring Beaubouef, to cut its deficit to 6-3.
Patterson’s other run came in the top of the seventh when Fabre reached on an error by North Webster shortstop Orr and advanced to second base on the play.
Fabre advanced to third on Gouaux’s single to centerfield and scored on Beaubouef’s groundout to shortstop.
Vidrine earned the win for North Webster. In seven innings, he allowed three unearned runs on eight hits with one walk and six strikeouts.
Gouaux suffered the loss for Patterson. In three innings, he surrendered six runs — five earned — on five hits with one walk, two hit batters and two strikeouts.
Gouaux led Patterson with a 3-for-4 performance with a run. Other top offensive contributors included Beaubouef, 1-for-3, a triple, two RBIs and a run; and Dreyer, 1-for-4, an RBI.
McClure led North Webster with a 2-for-2 performance with a double, two RBIs and two stolen bases. Other top offensive contributors included Atchley, 2-for-3, a double, one stolen base, a run; and Patrick Modisette, 2-for-3, a run.
Patterson left eight runners on base, while North Webster stranded five.
“We left some runners in scoring position early, where a hit here or there could have gotten us on the board,” Jensen said. “You have to credit them. They made pitches and plays when it mattered. This game was just like so many this season. We seemed to be right there in so many games and just couldn’t make that big pitch or play, or get the clutch hit.”
Hits Monday were even at eight apiece.
Patterson finishes its season with a 12-17 mark.
North Webster, (23-6) winners of 11 straight, will continue postseason play with a Class 3A regional round contest at No. 23 Pine Prairie. Pine Prairie advanced to the second round after upsetting No. 10 De La Salle, 2-1, Monday in New Orleans.
Patterson will say good bye to a senior class that includes Sirbatian Charles, Bryce Beaubouef, Tyrik Singleton and Brennan Gouaux.
“This senior class has played a lot of innings for us over the last 4 years,” Jensen said. “It will be a tough group to replace. The contributions they made this season will surely be missed.”
