'Jacks fall in weather-shortened game
Catholic High-New Iberia powered through ankle-deep water to upend Patterson, 21-0, at the Sugar Dome Friday.
Heavy rain started after halftime, and the game was called because of lightning with six minutes to play.
Catholic High (3-0), ranked 10th in the latest Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 2A poll, used a powerful ground game to keep Patterson (0-3) on its heels all night.
The Panthers had two running backs rush for more than a 100 yards. The squad totaled nearly 300 yards rushing. Jadan Stokes had 125 yards and a touchdown, while Ben Landry had 108 yards and a score.
Catholic High didn’t attempt a pass.
Patterson grabbed the early momentum by recovering fumbles on two of the Panthers’ first three offensive possessions. Catholic fumbled the watered-logged ball five times.
“They gave us chance and chance with the turnovers, but we just couldn’t put a drive together,” first-year Patterson Head Coach Marvin Dantzler said. “We were limited in the run and pass games. Being a new coach, I must do a better job of learning my personal, and we may have to make some changes.”
Dantzler did make a change at quarterback Friday after watching the offense struggle in the first half. Freshman Randy Paul Jr. replaced Dillan Giandelone at the start of the second half.
“I liked what I saw out of Randy,” Dantzler said. “We will work with him all week, and he will be our starter next week. We wanted to get past these three games before putting a freshman out there. But we also liked what Dillan (Giandelone) did in the run game. So both will play going forward. We will also put Dillan back on defense where he was an all-district performer last year.”
Giandelone was 2-of-8 passing for 38 yards with an interception Friday, while Paul was 0-of-1 through the air in the second half washout.
Senior Jordan Butler had the ’Jacks’ two receptions.
Patterson managed just 97 yards of total offense.
Giandelone was the top rusher with nine carries for 58 yards. Running back Dajon Richard carried 11 times for (minus-2) yards.
“I wasn’t happy with the run game at all,” Dantzler said. “My young running back has missed some holes, and the offensive line has to do a better job of staying with their blocks longer. But all of these things are fixable, and we will get it straightened out and take off like Patterson has done in the past.”
Friday’s contest marked the second straight that the ’Jacks didn’t score.
Dantzler says defensively, the team has played well enough to win a game.
“I’m not taking anything from Catholic High because they’re a well-coached football team, but with any offensive consistency, I think we win games one and three,” he said.
Patterson was just 1 of 10 on third-downs and 0 for 2 on fourth downs Friday.
“These kids are still playing very hard, and we will not panic,” Dantzler said. “There’s still a lot of football to be played.”
Patterson will play its last non-district game Friday on the road against Ellender (1-2). The game will be played at South Terrebonne High School in Bourg where the Patriots play their home games.
The Patriots beat Bonnabel, 12-0, Friday.
