MCHS boys hoops wins season opener
Morgan City High School started the J.P. Piper era on the right foot as the squad defeated Jeanerette, 84-69, on the road Monday in the Tigers’ season opener.
While Morgan City led 25-11 after a quarter, Jeanerette outscored the Tigers 20-18 in the second quarter and 21-14 in the third quarter and trailed 57-52 heading into the fourth.
Morgan City put the game away in the final period, outscoring Jeanerette, 27-17.
The Tigers had four players in double figures, led by Makye Richard with 22 points. Other scorers included Kerwin Francois, 16 points; Ke’Sean Francois, 14; Jared Singleton, 13; Deondre Grogan, eight; Morrquise Charles, six; and Taaj Daniels, five.
Piper, a longtime ex-Nicholls State men’s hoops coach, took over the Morgan City program late this summer.
The Tigers (1-0) won’t return to the court until Monday when they face Plaquemine in their opening game at White Castle’s tournament. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m.
