MCHS eyeing 1st playoff berth since ’09

The Morgan City High School Lady Tigers entered Tuesday’s contest needing a win to keep their playoff hopes alive.
The Lady Tigers did just that with an easy 57-31 victory against the Lady Gators in District 7-4A action at home.
Morgan City entered Tuesday’s contest ranked No. 29 in the latest unofficial Louisiana High School Athletic Association Class 4A power rankings and are attempting to make the postseason for the first time since 2009.
The girls’ basketball regular season ends Saturday and the playoffs, in which the top 32 seeds from each class are chosen, will be announced Monday.
Morgan City head coach Anthony Garrison acknowledged the game was big because of the possible playoff implications but also because they played their style of basketball.
“Obviously we got into a slump entering district and we felt we let some games slip away. This game we got back to our old selves and that’s a good feeling heading into the postseason,” Garrison said, noting the assumption that they do make the playoffs. “This season is a big improvement from the last few years, and we’re very proud of our girls. However this is only the first step in the process of what (assistant) coach (David) Washington and I are trying to establish with the girls’ basketball program.”
In Tuesday’s win, Morgan City jumped out to a huge 23-5 lead after the first quarter and took a commanding 37-9 lead at halftime.
While Morgan City (14-9 overall, 3-5 in district) was held scoreless in the third quarter, it still led 37-14 after three quarters before outscoring South Terrebonne 20-17 in the final period.
Casey Chenevert led the Lady Tigers with 29 points, including five 3-pointers, while Laqwajhia Bourgeois had 12 points. Other top contributors included Kaylyn Washington and Meya Morse with six points apiece.
Tuesday’s contest was Morgan City’s final regular season game. The Lady Tigers now will wait to see if they qualify for the postseason.
CCHS wins district title
The Central Catholic Lady Eagles clinched the District 7-1A title Tuesday with a 70-26 win at Ascension Episcopal.
Randi Brown led the Lady Eagles with 26 points. She also recorded nine assists, eight rebounds, seven steals and one block.
Teammate Meo Knight had 16 points, nine rebounds, seven steals, seven assists and one block.
Other top contributors included Megan Landry, 12 points, six rebounds and two assists; Gee Garrett, four points, two blocks, one assist and seven rebounds; Anastasia Johnson, six points and one rebound; and Hanna McCue, four points and two rebounds.
Central Catholic (23-2, 11-0) will take a break from district play Thursday when it travels to Houma to face Ellender in a nondistrict game set for 6 p.m. The game originally had been scheduled for last month but had to be delayed due to weather conditions.
Patterson falls to
Donaldsonville
The Patterson Lumberjills fell to Donaldsonville, 51-44, in District 9-3A action in Patterson Tuesday.
While Patterson trailed just 13-12 after the first quarter, the difference in the game was the second and third quarters when Donaldsonville outscored the home squad a combined 26-16. Donaldsonville led 26-19 at halftime and 39-28 after three quarters.
Patterson closed the gap in the final quarter with a 16-12 scoring advantage.
Gaylen Grogan led the Lumberjills with a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds, while Jazmin Evans had a team-high 18 points.
Other top contributors included Makayla Ruiz, seven points; Nia Broussard, two points and six rebounds; Jamila Tate, five points; and Jamiri Brown, six assists.
Patterson (9-17 overall, 3-4) will close its season with a District 9-3A contest at home Friday against E.D. White.
