The Morgan City High School Tigers’ soccer team will begin first-round Division II playoff action today when they host West Ouachita today at 5 p.m. at Tiger Stadium.
The Tigers (10-8-3), the No. 11 seed, found out their opponents Wednesday and while the Tigers were expecting to play on Saturday, things were pushed up at the request of West Ouachita’s coach, who wanted to play the game today, Morgan City soccer coach Trevor Patterson said.
While he expects the field to be slippery after rains in the last two days, he said that the field drains well so he expects no standing water.
“For the speed of play, being that we have some fast players like Irving (Delgado) and some other ones and controlling the midfield, it might have a little issue, but I think we’re going to be fine with it,” Patterson said.
While the Tigers started off strong with a solid finish at the Copa Cup tournament in Lafayette, the Tigers hit a slump as they were drained after the successful finish at the Copa Cup and lost some players to injuries in the next tournament, Patterson said.
However, the Tigers rebounded after a Christmas break and came back and played well against Vandebilt Catholic and E.D. White.
“Unfortunately we lost them both, but both coaches complimented our boys saying this was probably some of the hardest games they’ve played all year,” Patterson said.
The Tigers actually played better in their second contests against Vandebilt Catholic and E.D. White, two teams ranked in the top 10 of the Division II bracket. Although they lost both games, the scores were closer than their first meeting.
West Ouachita comes into today’s game with a 5-20 record but they fell to a lot of Division I teams this season.
“If you look at their schedule, they’ve had some tough teams that they’ve played up there,” Patterson said. “From what I understand talking to the coach, he has some seniors but he has a whole bunch of young players that he’s trying to produce for the next couple years.”
