The Morgan City High School Tigers will face some adversity this week when they travel to face South Terrebonne.
Already trying to snap a three-game losing streak, the team will be without some of its top players this season due to injury.
Morgan City head coach Scott Tregle said Wednesday that two of the team’s top three rushers, Kedric Scott (first) and Malik Phillips (third) as well as its leading receiver, Makye Richard, will be out due to injuries.
Scott, who led the team in rushing a week ago with 10 carries for 45 yards, leads the team on the ground this season with 77 carries for 325 yards and three touchdowns. Phillips has rushed 42 times for 273 yards and five touchdowns, while Richard leads the receivers with 18 catches for 290 yards and three touchdowns.
With Scott out, the Tigers’ top rusher available is Ethan Scioneaux, who is second on the team with 45 carries for 285 yards and four touchdowns.
In the receiving department, Lloyd Singleton is second with seven catches for 155 yards.
Quarterback Abram Hartley has completed 34 of 86 passes for 555 yards with four touchdowns and three interceptions.
In last week’s loss to Ellender, Morgan City scored just two points via a safety by Andre Welsh when he sacked Ellender quarterback Curtis Anderson in the end zone late in the second half to cut Morgan City’s deficit to 14-2.
While Morgan City’s defense gave up two scores early, they settled in and kept the Patriots off the scoreboard for much of the remainder of the first half. While the Tigers had the ball in Ellender territory multiple times in the first half with the game still undecided, they could never reach the end zone.
Ellender scored on the first-half’s final play and went into halftime down 22-2 and cruised from there.
“We’ve been working on offense a lot more this week, trying to put the ball in the end zone. That’s our focus,” Morgan City head coach Scott Tregle said. “We’re going to be a little short-handed. We got a few people injured that’s not going to play, but hopefully we can score some points.”
South Terrebonne, meanwhile, comes into this week’s contest with a 0-7 mark and is 0-2 in district after falling to Assumption 34-14 a week ago.
While Tregle noted that South Terrebonne has surrendered a few more touchdowns than in the past, Tregle noted that the Gators’ nondistrict schedule featured Class 5A teams.
“They (are) not a bad team,” Tregle said. “We’re going to have to play really well to beat them. We’re going to have to quit making mistakes.”
South Terrebonne runs a wing-T offense like Morgan City and feature basic plays.
“A lot of the same plays we run,” Tregle said. “They do have some big guys up front that they do a good job of blocking, and on (the) defensive line, they have two real big guys. One of them was an MVP last year in district, so they’re pretty good up front.”
The Gators feature defensive tackle/fullback Louis Blanchard, was the district’s most valuable player on defense a year ago.
In last week’s loss to South Terrebonne, Blanchard rushed 17 times for 113 yards and two touchdowns.
“They run him out the I-formation,” Tregle said. “They put him at tailback and they put this other big d-lineman at fullback and they power you.”
He said they put Blanchard at fullback in other plays.
“He’s a big strong kid,” Tregle said. “Assumption had a tough time tackling him.”
The Morgan City coach said the Tigers will have to gang tackle him and hit him low.
South Terrebonne also features quarterback Kaleb Voisin, who Tregle said runs well.
While South Terrebonne tied the game at 7 with eight minutes to play in the second quarter on Blanchard’s two-yard touchdown run, Assumption reeled off 27 straight points for a 34-7 lead.
South Terrebonne scored its final touchdown on a six-yard run by Blanchard with less than two minutes remaining in the ball game.
Defensively, South Terrebonne runs a 4-3 with either cover 3 or cover 2 looks.
When they get in short-yardage situations, they’ll use six down linemen.
