The Morgan City Lady Tigers will begin their postseason play at home Thursday when they face Thomas Jefferson High School out of Harvey.
The Lady Tigers enter the contest as the No. 15 seed, while Thomas Jefferson is the No. 18 seed.
Morgan City was a wildcard selection to the postseason after finishing the regular season with a 12-20 mark and in fourth place in District 6-III with a 4-6 mark.
Thomas Jefferson comes into the contest as the District 7-III champion with a 22-15 overall record. They finished district play undefeated.
Morgan City head coach Christy Theriot said she has heard that Thomas Jefferson is an athletic squad and that members of the school’s basketball team played volleyball this year.
“So they’re better than they have been in the past,” she said.
Both teams have one common opponent this year in St. Martin’s Episcopal. While Morgan City defeated the Metairie school, Thomas Jefferson lost to them.
As for Morgan City’s season, which began with just two key players from a year ago on the court in Jaivieanna Jones and Brandi Ingram, head coach Christy Theriot said her team is “finally coming into our own.”
While she noted that hitters had been struggling, they are learning new shots to add to their arsenal.
She also said her team has been playing harder.
“They seem to have more competitiveness and drive,” she said.
Heading into the playoffs, Theriot said, “We’re going to have to serve tough, and we’ve been staying on the middles (hitters) about moving around, not hitting from the same spot, every time, every time and our outsides (hitters) cutting down on their errors.”
Theriot said the Lady Tigers’ postseason success will depend a lot on how they play.
“It’s all in our hands and it’s not the physical aspect that we’re lacking,” Theriot said. “It’s that mental competitiveness. They won’t rise to that occasion. They’re either up or they’re down.”
