Morgan City will conclude season Friday against Assumption

We’re not really giving up the big, big play, but they’re just marching down the field on us, 10, 20 yards at a time.

The Morgan City High School Tigers will close their 2014 football season Friday when they host the Assumption Mustangs.
While the Tigers have struggled this season with a 2-7 mark, Morgan City head football coach Scott Tregle said he thought the season has been positive.
“We had some unfortunate injuries to some of the older guys, and we had to play with a lot of young kids on the field, but they’re still staying positive at practice and working hard, (working in) the weight room every day, running,” Tregle said. “They haven’t given up. They want to represent Morgan City High with pride, and I think we’re doing that every time we step on the field.”
In last week’s 55-26 loss to Vandebilt Catholic, Morgan City took a 7-0 lead with a touchdown on its first offensive possession of the game and stopped the Terrier’s on their first offensive drive. However, the Tigers could not keep up the scoring on offense and could not hold down the Terriers, who at one point scored on eight consecutive offensive possessions en route to the big victory.
Vandebilt Catholic had a big night running the ball against Morgan City.
Tregle said his squad has struggled stopping the run because of a lack of size, strength and experience. Along the defensive front, the Tigers have lost their two starting defensive ends, Tyrice Oliney and Darian Verdun, to injuries this season.
“We’re not really giving up the big, big play, but they’re just marching down the field on us, 10, 20 yards at a time,” Tregle said.
To fix that, Tregle said it will take gaining “experience and age when we get more physical, another whole year in the weight room and getting bigger.”
Tregle expects another physical game upfront this week from Assumption, who he said runs a wing T and uses a lot of veer-option out of it.
“The quarterback’s a good back and they have three good running backs. Their offensive line’s pretty physical, so we’re looking for a battle in the trenches,” Tregle said.
Like Morgan City, Assumption also has struggled this season and enters Friday’s contest with a 2-7 mark.
A week ago against E.D. White, the Mustangs fell 32-12.
Assumption, which runs a 4-3 defense, surrendered 305 rushing yards to the Cardinals in the contest.
While Assumption tied the game at 6 with 36 seconds remaining in the first quarter via quarterback Daron Williams’ 2-yard touchdown run, Assumption could get no closer the remainder of the game as the Cardinals responded on their next offensive drive and later used a turnover to extend its lead to a 19-6 halftime advantage en route to the win.
Assumption’s Dontrez Williams leads the Mustangs’ run game with 662 yards on 130 carries with eight touchdowns.
Not far behind is Williams, who has rushed 93 times for 587 yards and eight scores.
Williams also has completed 39 of 84 passes for 487 yards with three touchdowns and one interception.
Leading receivers for the Mustangs are Joshua Brown with nine catches for 169 yards, while Jimmie Wise has caught 13 passes for 134 yards and two scores. Melvin Young has hauled in 10 catches for 129 yards and one score.
Morgan City is led by running back Kevon Marsh, who has 117 carries for 775 yards and seven scores, while fellow backfield mate Jacolbi Francois has toted the football 70 times for 332 yards and four touchdowns.
Jaylen Jones also has carried 27 times for 214 yards and two scores.
Through the air, quarterback Hector Tolento has completed 23 of 65 passes for 426 yards with four scores and five interceptions.
Jones has caught 21 passes for 450 yards and four scores to lead the Tigers’ receivers.
