Morgan City will host Vandebilt Catholic Friday
Morgan City High School and Vandebilt Catholic will meet in a District 7-4A contest in Morgan City Friday.
Morgan City is 4-4 overall and 0-3 in district, dropping its fourth straight contest a week ago to previously winless South Terrebonne, 28-14.
Meanwhile, Vandebilt Catholic enters the game 2-6 overall and 1-2 in district, falling to Assumption 47-22 a week ago.
In last week’s loss, Morgan City trailed just 21-14 at halftime following a 3-yard touchdown pass from Abram Hartley to Makye Richard.
However, the Tigers were held off the scoreboard in the second half, while South Terrebonne added a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Morgan City finished with 212 yards of total offense (78 rushing, 134 passing). Kedric Scott led the Tigers with 15 carries for 40 yards and a touchdown. Hartley completed 9-of-19 passes for 134 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. Richard had five catches for 124 yards and a score.
South Terrebonne finished with 306 yards of total offense (223 rushing, 83 passing).
This season, Scott leads Morgan City’s running game with 92 carries for 365 yards and four touchdowns, while Ethan Scioneaux has rushed 50 times for 292 yards and four touchdowns.
Hartley has completed 43-of-105 passes for 689 yards with five touchdowns and five interceptions. Richard leads Morgan City’s receivers with 22 catches for 397 yards and four touchdowns.
Despite the adversity the squad has faced, Morgan City Head Coach Scott Tregle said his team has had a good week of practice and they still are putting forth effort and want to improve.
“That’s all I can ask of them,” he said.
After scoring a safety apiece in its first two district games, Morgan City’s offense was able to generate some points last week, something Tregle agreed was good for their confidence.
“It was pretty nice to get a couple of scores this week, and (we) want to continue to keep working on our offense and try to use our weapons as best we can,” he said.
This week’s opponent, Vandebilt Catholic, is led on offense by running back Michael Lecompte, quarterback David Yancey and wide receiver Kane Degruise.
Lecompte, who Tregle said “runs real hard,” has rushed 139 times for 612 yards and three touchdowns.
Yancey has completed 81-of-158 passes for 857 yards with eight touchdowns and four interceptions, while he also has rushed 48 times for 190 yards and six touchdowns.
“The quarterback, he’s very elusive in the pocket,” Tregle said. He can pull it down and run. He’s a real good quarterback.”
Tregle said Yancey can make good throws, too.
Meanwhile, Degruise leads the receivers with 42 catches for 641 yards and seven touchdowns.
“They’re going to be tough to stop,” Tregle said of the Vandebilt offense.
Tregle said his team will have to play good defense and keep its offense on the field to keep the football away from Vandebilt’s offense.
Defensively, Tregle said Vandebilt Catholic runs a 4-2-5 and a 3-3 stack and runs cover 2 and cover 3.
“They mix it up, but they’re scrappy,” he said.
Tregle said he is hopeful the Tigers can get some breaks and turnovers and ultimately, win the game.
“We can compete with them, no doubt,” he said. “We just got to get a few breaks. Like I said, the last couple of weeks, people (have) been getting that (breaks) on us.”
Friday’s kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
