Panthers win two this weekend

Berwick High School picked up two wins this weekend, a 2-1 win against Thomas Jefferson Saturday and a 17-0 victory against Franklin Friday in five innings.
In Saturday’s win, Berwick scored a run in the fourth when Bradley Gray stole third and Thomas Jefferson’s catcher’s attempt to throw him out went into left field, allowing Gray to score.
In the sixth inning, Gray doubled, moved to third on a ground ball by Daniel Gray and scored on D.J. Robicheaux’s fielder’s choice ground ball to second base.
Thomas Jefferson countered with its lone run in the bottom of the sixth.
Berwick outhit Thomas Jefferson 7-3.
Daniel Gray earned the win as he tossed a three-hitter.
In 5.2 innings, he surrendered an unearned run on three hits with one walk and fanned five.
Neal Theriot Jr. pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless, hitless relief, retiring the four batters he faced.
Offensively, Bradley Gray led Berwick with a 2-for-3 performance with a double.
Other top offensive contributors included Cameron Wiley, 2-for-3; and Robicheaux, an RBI.
In Friday’s win, Berwick scored in every inning except the fourth, plating six runs in the first, one in the second, seven in the third and three in the fifth.
The Panthers outhit Franklin 13-3, while the Hornets committed four errors.
Berwick used five pitchers, each working an inning, and combined for eight strikeouts and one walk.
Nick Mayon, the first pitcher used, earned the win as he fanned one in one inning.
Other pitchers used in the contest included Robicheaux, who allowed one walk and fanned two; Logan Angeron, who allowed a hit and fanned one; Austin Price, who surrendered two hits and fanned two; and Grant Oubre, who fanned two.
Offensively, Justin Morvant led Berwick with a 2-for-2 performance with two doubles and one RBI.
Other top contributors included Andrew Askew, 1-for-2, a double and two RBIs; Bradley Gray, 1-for-1, a double and an RBI; Robicheaux, 1-for-2, a double and an RBI; Cody Roberie, 2-for-2, an RBI; Braden Billiot, 2-for-2, an RBI; Kyle Pitre, 1-for-2, an RBI; Brandon Fryou, 1-for-3, an RBI; and Ryan Hover, 1-for-1, a double.
Berwick also picked up a forfeit win, the Louisiana High School Athletic Association announced Friday.
While the Panthers had lost to New Iberia 10-8 in the Tri-City Classic on Feb. 27, according to LHSAA paperwork released Friday, the school had to forfeit the victory due to use of an ineligible player in the contest.
Berwick’s record now stands at (15-6 overall).
The team will face its toughest test of the season Tuesday as it hosts Class 3A’s top-ranked team, John Curtis at 5:30 p.m.

weekend games
Morgan City High School split its weekend games with a 13-2 victory against South Terrebonne in five innings at home Friday before falling 6-2 in Houma to Vandebilt Catholic Saturday.
In Saturday’s loss, Morgan City allowed three runs in the bottom of the first inning.
After Morgan City’s right fielder lost the ball in the sun allowing runners to reach first and second base safely, the next Vandebilt Catholic batter tripled to left-centerfield.
In the bottom of the fifth, Vandebilt scored three more runs with one out via four consecutive hits.
Morgan City scored a run in the sixth after Philip Hutchinson, who led off the inning with a single, later scored on a hit by Brady Fryou.
In the seventh, Josh Lorenzo led off the inning with a hit and after Rhett Fryou singled and Alex Brocato walked, Lorenzo scored on a double play hit to shortstop.
Morgan City had seven hits led by Hutchinson’s 2-for-4 performance.
Rhett Fryou suffered the loss. In six innings, he surrendered seven hits, one walk and fanned two.
On Friday, Morgan City did much of its damage in an eight-run third inning.
Already ahead 5-0, Morgan City scored runs in the third via a two-RBI hit by Brocato, and later a single by Brady Fryou before Morrquise Charles delivered the inning’s big blast with a grand slam to right field.
Morgan City had nine hits led by Matt Lorenzo’s 2-for-2 performance and Charles’ grand slam.
Other top contributors included Brady Fryou, 2-for-4, and Hutchinson, Evan Stadalis, Brocato and Abram Hartley each with a hit.
Morgan City’s Ethan Scioneaux earned the win. In five innings, he surrendered five hits, one walk and fanned five.
Morgan City (6-10 overall, 2-1 in district) will return to action Tuesday when it hosts Assumption in a District 7-4A contest. Assumption is 3-0 in district play.
