Patterson Lumberjacks beat McDonogh 35

Patterson overcame McDonogh 35’s size for a 49-43 win in opening round play at St. Martinville’s tournament Thursday.
Patterson trailed 10-7 after the first quarter but responded with a 15-7 scoring advantage in the second quarter for a 22-17 halftime lead.
However, McDonogh 35 retook the lead heading into the fourth quarter, 27-26, before Patterson outscored the New Orleans-based school 23-16 in the final period.
“I was very pleased with our defensive effort,” Patterson head coach Ryan Taylor said. “They were much bigger than us, but we did a good job of blocking out and being physical. We must continue to get better each time we are on the floor.”
Jedrick Gunner and Dontrell Benjamin each reached double figures for Patterson with 11 points apiece, while Taylan Grogan added seven; Larry Turner and Nehemiah Augustus, six points apiece; DJ Jones, four; and Daylon Charlot, two.
Patterson (4-0) will return to action today at 6 p.m. when it faces New Iberia at the tournament.
