Patterson Lumberjacks edge Catholic High-New Iberia

By CORWIN MURRAY

Patterson roared back from 14 points down twice to outlast Catholic High-New Iberia, 42-41.
The teams combined for nearly 1,000 yards of total offense in the heart-stopping game.
Patterson senior quarterback Sirbatian Charles practically willed the ’Jacks to victory, completing 13 of 24 passes for 192 yards with two touchdowns while rushing 18 times for 165 yards.
“He’s been doing stuff like that since he got here,” Patterson coach Chad Blanchard said. “He got us out of some bad situations. It gets to a point that we expect it out of him. I’m happy for him. He’s a good kid, and I’m glad our seniors got that first W and hopefully we can get this thing going.”
Charles wasn’t the only standout carrying his team Friday.
Catholic running back Seth Pierre paced the Panthers’ offense with 30 carries for 246 yards and three touchdowns.
Catholic opened the game with a six play, 45-yard drive that Pierre capped on a 12-yard run with 9:39 remaining in the opening quarter.
Patterson answered with a six play, 68-yard drive that ended a Tristen Ausama four-yard scoring run with 7:21 remaining in the opening quarter.
The first quarter ended tied at 7, but with the Panthers threatening with a second-and-goal at the ’Jacks’ 5-yard line, Pierre put Catholic ahead on a five-yarder on the first play of the second quarter. Panthers’ kicker Thomas Gardner added his second extra-point for a 14-7 Catholic lead with 11:55 remaining in the second quarter.
Charles fumbled on the next Patterson possession, Catholic recovered and after Pierre did the heavy lifting, quarterback Diallo Landry scored on a 16-yard run to extend the lead to 21-7 with 7:04 remaining in the quarter. Landry finished the game with three rushing touchdowns.
Patterson didn’t go away, however, driving downfield on a 12-play, 76-yard drive that ended with Charles’ 10-yard pass to Brennan Gouaux with 2:51 remaining. Patterson kicker Christian Soria added the point after to cut Catholic’s lead to 21-14.
But just as momentum seemed to swing to Patterson, Catholic converted a fourth-and-six for a first-down with 1:26 remaining in the half. Landry scored on a 10-yard run with 37 seconds left.
Catholic High-N.I. led 28-14 at halftime.
Pierre had 135 yards rushing in the first half.
Patterson opened the second half with a big score. ’Jacks speedster D.J. Jones took a handoff and flew by Catholic’s defense for a 36-yard touchdown. Patterson trailed CHNI 28-21 with 10:12 remaining in the third quarter.
Catholic fumbled on its first play from scrimmage, and Tyric Garrett recovered for Patterson. Patterson (1-2) took over at the Catholic 29-yard line, and Charles found Jordan Butler, who made an outstanding leaping catch in the end zone for a touchdown. Soria added the extra point kick to tie the game 28 with 9:40 remaining in the third quarter.
“I thought the fumble at the beginning of the third quarter finally put momentum in our corner,” Blanchard said. “It was still a back-and-forth game, but that was a big play.”
The track meet continued as Catholic came back with an eight-play, 65-yard drive that Pierre capped by jogging 19 yards for another score. Gardner added the extra-point kick for a 35-28 Catholic lead with 6:30 remaining in the third quarter.
The ’Jacks’ defense kept the Panthers off the scoreboard to end the third quarter, and Catholic led Patterson 35-28 after three quarters.
“We didn’t change anything defensively at the half,” Blanchard said. “We just asked the kids to play harder, and they responded. We’re an undersized defense, but we’re also very hardnosed.”
Patterson opened the fourth quarter with a 10-play drive that Jones capped with a 23-yard run with 8:43 remaining. Soria added the kick to tie the game again at 35.
Patterson’s defense forced a three-and-out, and the offense took over at the 50-yard line with 7:33 left in the game. Charles took a quarterback keeper 25 yards to setup Patterson first-and-10 at Catholic’s 24-yard line with 6:33 remaining. Charles kept the ball again on the zone read for 18-yards for a first-and-goal at the 6-yard line with 6:15 to go.
After an illegal procedure penalty backed the ’Jacks up, Charles carried again for 10 yards to give Patterson a second-and-goal from the 1-yard line.
Ausama did the honors from there to give Patterson its first lead of the night at 5:32. Soria added the extra point kick for a 42-35 ’Jacks lead.
Catholic promptly marched the ball downfield, mainly on the legs of Pierre.
With 1:40 left in the game, the Panthers faced a fourth-and-inches at the ’Jacks’ 5-yard line. Landry got 3-yards, and he punched it in from there to bring Catholic within a point at 42-41 with 1:06 left on the clock.
With the team and its fans still celebrating, Gardner’s extra point kick went awry.
Catholic’s onsides kick didn’t go 10 yards, so Patterson took over with 1:06 remaining in the game. Catholic’s defense stuffed Patterson’s rushing attempts to setup a third-and-7 from the Panthers’ 38-yard line with 55 seconds left in the game. Charles took it into his hands again and darted seven yards for the first-down and Patterson’s first win of the season.
“I’m just happy for our kids,” Blanchard said. “The kids take losing hard and two games in a row is unacceptable to them, but we have been a successful program and the kids want to continue that.”
Patterson will host its first home game of the season Friday when Ellender (1-2) comes to town.
