PHS, BHS softball tourneys are this weekend

There will be plenty of softball on tap in Patterson and Berwick this weekend as Patterson High hosts its second annual Ned Stephens Memorial Tournament, while Berwick will host its annual Lady Panther Classic.
In addition to the host team, Patterson’s tournament will feature White Castle, Loreauville, Ellender, Fisher, Westgate, De La Salle, Highland Baptist, French Settlement, Covenant Christian and Centerville.
The tournament also will have a junior high component that will feature teams from Morgan City, Berwick and Patterson Junior high schools as well as Central Catholic’s junior high team. Morgan City, Patterson and Central Catholic all will have sixth-grade teams competing, too.
The tournament actually kicks off today with a road game when Patterson plays at White Castle.
The remainder of the tournament will be held at Kemper Williams Park on Friday and Saturday on three fields.
Friday’s local action includes a 7:30 p.m. matchup between Patterson and De La Salle.
In the junior high portion of the tournament, Morgan City will face Berwick at 5 p.m., Patterson Junior High will meet Central Catholic at 6:30 p.m. and in a sixth-grade matchup, Patterson Junior High will face Central Catholic at 8 p.m.
Other games Friday included Loreauville vs. Ellender and White Castle vs. Highland Baptist, both at 3:30 p.m.; Fisher vs. Westgate and French Settlement vs. White Castle, both at 5:30 p.m. and Covenant Christian vs. Centerville at 7:30 p.m.
On Saturday, Patterson will play its lone game against Highland Baptist at 9 a.m.
Other Tri-City area action will include a sixth-grade matchup between Morgan City Junior High and Patterson Junior High at 9 a.m., Morgan City Junior High vs. Patterson Junior High at 10 a.m., Morgan City Junior High vs. Central Catholic at 11:30 a.m., a sixth-grade game between Morgan City and Central Catholic at 1 p.m., Berwick Junior High and Patterson Junior High at 2 p.m. and Berwick Junior High and Central Catholic Junior High at 3:30 p.m.
In other varsity action, Loreauville and Covenant Christian will meet at 9 a.m., Ellender and Westgate and De La Salle and Fisher will meet at 11 a.m., French Settlement and Covenant Christian and Highland Baptist and Loreauville will meet at 1 p.m.; Westgate and Centerville and Fisher and Ellender will meet at 3 p.m.; and Centerville and French Settlement and White Castle and De La Salle will meet at 5 p.m.
In Berwick, the Lady Panther Classic will feature a one-day tournament on Saturday.
The tournament originally was scheduled for two days but was shortened to one day after Central Catholic withdrew because its girls’ basketball team is participating in the Class 1A state championship Saturday, Berwick coach Lloyd Burchfield said.
At 10 a.m., Catholic High-New Iberia will face Berwick, while at noon, Teurlings Catholic will meet Berwick.
At 2 p.m., Catholic High-New Iberia will face Teurlings Catholic.
