SEHS topples Hanson

LAFAYETTE _ St. Edmond jumped out to an early 3-0 lead en route to a 5-1 win over the Hanson Memorial Tigers Tuesday at UL-Lafayette’s Tigue Field.
Hanson (14-2) failed to recover from three fielding errors along with base-running miscues on the big stage at Tigue Field.
St. Ed pitcher Drew Brown took the win, outdueling Hanson Memorial’s Evan Thibodaux and Josh Sanchez.
Brown started for the Blue Jays, going the distance, allowing one run on nine hits with five strikeouts and one walk. Brown faced 28 batters, tossing 84 pitches, including 58 strikes and 26 balls.
Thibodeaux started for the HMS Tigers, working 4.33 innings, giving up four runs (none earned) on six hits with four strikeouts and four walks. Thibodaux faced 24 batters, throwing 98 pitches with 57 strikes and 41 balls.
Sanchez hurled the final 1.67 innings, surrendering one run on two hits with one strikeout and one walk. He faced eight batters, threw 32 pitches, with 19 strikes and 13 balls.
St. Edmond broke open a scoreless game by rallying for three runs in the bottom half of the second inning when Alex Hunt, Jack Brown and Austin Sittig all tagged home plate for a 3-0 cushion. Hunt reached first base on an error as the Blue Jays scored three runs on one hit.
In the fourth frame, St. Ed’s Drake Brunet reached on an error and later scored to stretch SEHS’ lead to 4-0.
Hanson’s Cameron Stovall and John Guienze teamed up to manufacture HMS’ run in the top half of the fifth inning. Stovall, the Tigers’ DH, opened the fifth with a single. Guienze, who went 1 for 3, laced a run-scoring triple to plate Stovall and help the Tigers trim St. Ed’s lead to 4-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, St. Ed’s added an insurance run, strolling away with the 5-1 win.
Leading hitters for the HMS Tigers were: Luke Lancon, 1 for 4; Bo Barrilleaux, 3 for 3; Cameron Stovall, 1 for 3, run; John Guienze, 1 for 3, triple, RBI; Jacob Hebert, 1 for 2; Britt Young, 1 for 2 and Luke Rodriguez, 1 for 3.
Ross Lafleur led St. Edmond at the plate with a 2 for 4 outing with a pair of RBI. Gibson Lafleur also went 2 for 4 with one RBI while Drake Brunet was 2 for 4 with one run.
