Skipper’s wins; tourney field set

Morgan City High-based Skipper’s Sporting Goods won its regular season finale with a 5-1 win against South Lafourche-based Bayou Boys Tuesday.
No individual statistics were available from the contest.
While Skipper’s was fighting for one of the final spots in the Swampland Tournament, which begins today in Berwick, Taco Bell (Berwick) coach Mike Thomas, who also serves as Swampland League coordinator, said that because Houma Christian-based LaShip forfeited what Thomas said was “technically a rainout” to Robichaux Ford, Robichaux Ford advanced to the postseason instead of Morgan City. Robichaux Ford finished with a 7-5-1 record, which is a higher winning percentage than Skipper’s winning percentage with its 8-6 mark.
Thomas said changes will be made to Swampland League rules in the future to prevent this scenario.
He said forfeits will not be considered wins for the other teams, rainouts will be considered just that and made up if possible and teams will have to play at least 12 games to get into the postseason.
Also, he said that if a team forfeits twice in a season, for any reason, a committee of Swampland coaches will decide if the team will remain in the league.
In this year’s tournament, the top seed will be Jester’s Court (Central Lafourche), followed by Synergy Bank (E.D. White) at No. 2, the Diamondbacks (Terrebonne), 3; Halimar Shipyard (Central Catholic), 4; South Louisiana Bank (South Terrebonne), 5; and Robichaux Ford.
Action will begin today when Robichaux Ford takes on the Diamondbacks at 5 p.m., followed by Halimar Shipyard facing South Louisiana Bank at 7 p.m.
As the top two seeds, Jester’s Court and Synergy Bank received first-round byes.
The winner of the Robichaux Ford-Diamondbacks matchup will face No. 2 seed Synergy Bank (E.D. White) Thursday at 5 p.m. while the winner of Halimar Shipyard-South Louisiana Bank will follow against Jester’s Court at 7 p.m.
