Tigers, Lady Tigers compete at district meet

The Morgan City Tigers finished third at the District 7-4A track meet at South Terrebonne High School Thursday, while the Lady Tigers placed fifth.
The Tigers scored 82 points, while Assumption won the district team title with 101 points.
Several Tigers had solid performances, including Darryl Johnson, who was named Field MVP after placing first in the shot put and discus and fourth in the javelin. Johnson tossed the shot put 46 feet, 9-inches, while his discus heave was 152 feet and his javelin toss was 129 feet, 6 inches. He, along with all finishers in the top four of their events qualified for the regional meet, which will be held at East Jefferson High School on April 30.
Other first-place finishes for the Tigers included Kevon Marsh in the 100-meter dash, Jaylen Jones in the 200-meter run and triple jump and the Tigers’ 4x100- and 4x200-meter relays. Marsh clocked in at 11.08 seconds, while Jones ran the 200-meter dash in 22.21 and leaped 43 feet, six inches in the triple jump.
The Tigers’ 4x100-meter relay finished in 42.77, while its 4x200-meter relay recorded a 1:29.46 finish. Both relays were comprised of Jones, Tierell Jones, Marsh and Buddy Humphrey.
Other regional qualifiers for the Tigers included Tierell Jones, second in the 200-meter run at 22.51; the Tigers’ 4x400 meter relay of Tierell Jones, Marsh, Humphrey and Keshawn Marshall with a second-place finish at 3:42.22; Malcolm Watkins in the long jump with a second-place finish of 19 feet, 7 inches; and Watkins in the triple jump with a leap of 42 feet, 4 inches.
On the girls’ side, Morgan City’s Ke’aira Turner recorded the Lady Tigers’ two first-place finishes with a 13.39-second finish in the 100-meter dash and a 27.52-second finish in the 200-meter run.
Other qualifiers for regionals included the Lady Tigers’ 4x200- and 4x100-meter relays of Jaiveianna Jones, Turner, Brandi Jones and Hailey Harris. The 4x200 relay finished second with a time of 1:51.60, while the 4x100 finished third in 53.31.
Morgan City scored 30 points, while South Terrebonne won the girls’ team title with 134 points.
