Vandebilt Catholic tops Morgan City, 37-7

By GEOFF STOUTE, gstoute@daily-review.com

His team may have just defeated Morgan City High School by 30 points, but Vandebilt Catholic coach Jeremy Atwell was not happy after Friday night’s 37-7 victory against Morgan City.
In fact, he said he was “completely embarrassed with the victory” with his team being assessed multiple personal foul penalties — along with Morgan
City — in a game marred by a tense second half that featured what could have escalated quickly into a brawl on the Vandebilt Catholic sideline and ejections of Morgan City High School’s Malik Phillips and Vandebilt Catholic’s Kane Degruise just plays apart on the same fourth-quarter drive.
“I’m happy that we got a win for our guys,” Atwell said. “They continue to work, do what we asked them to do in terms of preparation but … completely embarrassed with the victory. That’s not what program we’re about. That’s not what we’re building. That’s not what we talk about. Whether it’s in defeat or in victory, we talk about glorifying God, and that’s what we’re about at our school, and what we did right there was just embarrass our school. … That’s completely on me as a head coach. You either coach it that way. You allow it to happen. We ain’t doing neither one, but I’m obviously not doing a good enough job of teaching these guys that that’s not how we’re going to do things.”
Morgan City coach Scott Tregle said, “Like Coach Atwell said, that ain’t how neither one of our teams play.”
Twice, Vandebilt Catholic and Morgan City were called for personal fouls on the same play that offset.
Also, play was delayed in the fourth quarter as Morgan City High School’s Scott Comeaux was injured on a punt return and taken from the field by
Acadian Ambulance.
He later was diagnosed with a fractured sixth vertebrae but is expected to make a full recovery, Tregle said. (See additional story on page 1).
As for the game, Vandebilt Catholic (3-6 overall, 2-2 in district) got on the board on its opening drive via a Jonah Pitre’s 35-yard field goal with 7:45 left in the first quarter.
The Terriers got their first touchdown of the night when quarterback David Yancey hit Degruise for a 12-yard touchdown completion with 23 second
remaining in the first quarter for a 9-0 Vandebilt Catholic lead.
The score remained the same until Morgan City (4-5, 0-4) cut its deficit to 9-7 on a Kedrick Scott 2-yard touchdown run with 4:39 remaining in the first
half.
Scott led the Tigers with 14 carries for 67 yards and a touchdown.
After Morgan City’s touchdown, the Terriers began to pull away with consecutive touchdowns on their next two drives.
The Terriers scored on a 21-yard run by Brennan Rogers with 1:51 remaining and added another touchdown on the final play of the half when Yancey hit
Degruise for a 37-yard touchdown.
Vandebilt Catholic led 23-7 at the half.
“I think with two touchdowns we got right there at the end picked up the pace a little bit for us, gave us the momentum,” Atwell said.
For the game, Yancey completed 7 of 16 passes for 118 yards with two touchdowns.
He also rushed seven times for 49 yards and a score.
Degruise had four catches for 63 yards and two touchdowns.
Tregle said he thought his team played hard the entire game.
“They competed well,” he said. “We just get down inside the 20-yard line, 10-yard line, and we just stall out. We completed some good passes. We
ran the ball on them pretty good in the second half. It is what it is. They just beat us, but I told the kids I’m proud of them. They played hard.”
The Terriers would add a touchdown in the third quarter on its opening drive on a Yancey 27-yard run for a 30-7 lead.
On the ensuing kickoff after Morgan City’s Phillips was stopped out of bounds on the Vandebilt Catholic sideline, some extra-curricular activity
occurred, flags began flying and players from the Morgan City sideline began running towards the Vandebilt Catholic sideline with Tregle soon following to break any possible situation up.
The situation was diffused before it got serious and after discussion, each team was assessed a personal foul that offset and play began soon after.
Vandebilt Catholic added a touchdown on its final offensive drive of the night on an 11-yard run by Rogers with 6:33 remaining. However, on
the play, Degruise was ejected. The ejection occurred just a few plays after Phillips was tossed for Morgan City earlier in the drive.
Vandebilt Catholic played Friday's game without leading rusher Michael Lecompte, who Atwell said was injured. Rogers and Dominic Maiorana
were the Terriers’ primary ball carriers.
Rogers had 15 carries for 99 yards and two touchdowns, while Maiorana had 12 carries for 48 yards.
Vandebilt Catholic totaled 314 yards of offense (196 rushing and 126 passing).
Morgan City totaled 300 yards of offense (166 rushing and 134 passing).
Abram Hartley completed 7 of 17 passes for 131 yards, while Makye Richard led the Morgan City receivers with four catches for 56 yards.
Morgan City will close its season Friday when it travels to take on Assumption.
