Walk-off walk lifts Berwick softball past Erath, 8-7, Thursday

Berwick High School never led in Thursday’s District 8-3A contest against Erath until the very end when the Lady Panthers left the field with a walk-off victory via a walk in an 8-7 contest.
The win came after a three-run rally to tie the game, sparked by Madison Carline’s two-run home run and ended when Erath’s pitcher issued a bases-loaded walk to Mary Grace Theriot with the game tied at 7 to give Berwick the come-from-behind victory.
Trailing 7-4 entering the Lady Panthers final at-bat, Jaci Arnold walked to begin the frame before Carline launched a two-run home run over the centerfield wall to cut Berwick’s lead to 7-6.
The next batter, Jordan Lipari, doubled, before Mary Jordan Melancon reached on an error and Emma Hover recorded an infield single to load the bases with no outs.
Sydney Aucoin drew a walk to tie the game, and after Hannah Henry struck out and Rosalyn Gros grounded into a fielder’s choice to get the lead runner at home, Theriot drew a walk to end the game.
Theriot finished 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run, while Carline was 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs.
Erath scored three runs in the top of the first, and Berwick plated one in the bottom of the frame.
Erath extended its lead to 4-1 in the top of the third, while Berwick cut its deficit to 4-3 in the bottom of the frame.
Each team scored a run in the fifth, and Erath plated two in the top of the sixth to extend its lead to 7-4.
Berwick outhit Erath, 13-8, while both teams committed four errors.
Lipari led the squad with a 3-for-4 performance with two doubles, an RBI and two runs. Other top contributors included Henry, 2-for-4; Arnold, 1-for-3, an RBI and a run; Aucoin, 1-for-3, an RBI; and Melancon, 1-for-4, an RBI
Lipari earned the win on the mound. In a complete-game effort, she surrendered seven runs on eight hits with one walk and five strikeouts.
Berwick (9-10 overall, 5-3 in district) will return to action Tuesday when it travels to face Kaplan in District 8-3A action. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
CCHS routs
Ascension Episcopal
The Central Catholic Lady Eagles run-ruled Ascension Episcopal, 18-0, in three innings in District 7-1A action in Bayou Vista Thursday.
After scoring a run in the first inning, the Lady Eagles exploded for 17 runs in the second inning, including a grand slam by Hallie Autin.
The game was called after three innings via the mercy rule.
Autin led Central Catholic with a 2-for-2 performance with a grand slam, seven RBIs, one stolen base and two runs. Other top contributors included Taylor Picou, 1-for-2, a double, an RBI, two stolen bases and two runs; and Rayne Hotard, 1-for-1, a double and two RBIs.
Sarah Thomas earned the win for Central Catholic. In three innings, she surrendered two hits, two walks and fanned three.
Central Catholic (11-9, 7-3) will return to action this weekend with a tough slate at the Catholic Tournament at Pelican Park. The Lady Eagles, the Class 1A state champions in 2015, will face Catholic High Pointe Coupee in a 4 p.m. contest today in a rematch of last year’s Class 1A state semifinal contest.
On Saturday, the Lady Eagles will meet Catholic High-New Iberia in a 10 a.m. contest, while at 3 p.m., they will play Teurlings Catholic. Teurlings Catholic was a Class 3A semifinalist a year ago.
Morgan City defeats South Terrebonne
Morgan City defeated South Terrebonne, 6-1, in District 7-4A action in Bourg Thursday.
Morgan City took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first.
While South Terrebonne cut its deficit to 3-1 in the bottom of the second, it could get no closer as Morgan City scored a run in the fourth and two in the fifth for a 6-1 lead.
Morgan City outhit South Terrebonne, 9-7, but on defense, Morgan City committed four errors.
Dwanna LeBeau led Morgan City with a 2-for-3 performance with a stolen base and two runs. Other top contributors included McKenzie Smith, 2-for-4, two RBIs and a run; Kennedy Hebert, 2-for-4, an RBI and two stolen bases; Hannah Prado, 1-for-2, an RBI; Reilee Bailey, 1-for-3, a double and an RBI; and Mattie Rivere, an RBI.
Hebert earned the win on the mound. In a complete-game effort, she surrendered one unearned run on seven hits with one hit batter and 11 strikeouts
Morgan City (12-5, 7-1), which has a one-game lead on second-place Assumption in the District 7-4A race, will host Vandebilt Catholic in district action Tuesday at 4 p.m.
Patterson falls
to Kaplan
The Patterson Lumberjills fell to Kaplan, 6-0, in District 8-3A action on the road Thursday.
Tapanga Haven suffered the loss for Patterson. In six innings, she surrendered six runs — two earned — with five walks and two strikeouts.
Patterson committed four errors, while Kaplan, ranked No. 4 in the latest Louisiana High School Athletic Association Class 3A power rankings, hit two home runs.
Offensively, Madison Goolsby led Patterson with a 1-for-1 performance. Other top offensive contributors included Haven and Madison Paul, each 1-for-2; and Mackenzie Marcel and Hailey Sehon, each 1-for-3.
Patterson (3-11, 2-7) will return to action Monday when it hosts North Vermilion in a 4 p.m. District 8-3A contest. North Vermilion is ranked No. 3 in the latest Class 3A power rankings.
